Ep. 3 of Let’s Engineer Some Sh*t : Temperature/Humidity Sensor Edition (for our DIY Mushroom Grow Chamber) 🌡️🌫️🍄

We’ve got some reishi and lion’s mane mushrooms (via North Spore that we’ve been growing in our DIY monotub the last couple of weeks! But we want to make sure we’re maintain a temperature around 70 degrees and humidity around 85% and to do that, we’re going to program an Arduino with a temp/humidity sensor to make sure we’re giving our shroomies the right growing conditions! 😌

Now, one challenge that we found from our sensor data is that our humidity is a little low in our chamber. Another challenge is that reishi and lion’s mane have slight different optimal growing conditions, so while a slightly higher humidity could make our reishi and lion’s mane happier overall, the lion’s mane would be happier in a slightly colder chamber, which will prove to be a super useful insight for our next cohort of job trainees! 🤓

Our next info session is TONIGHT at 6pm and attendees will learn how they can get paid to build projects and grow shroomies like these! We’ll be equipping each of our participants with a North Spore automated grow chamber so they can master their mycology skills! 🍄‍🟫🫡

Good news is the machine is back up and running, we got a couple of our slots that weren’t working fixed, and learned a LOT from James, the technician, that we didn’t know before (like how the shelves can lock so the don’t fall out when pulled all the way out… meaning we don’t need a ladder to clean and stock the top shelf anymore! 😌🥳).

Anyways, who thinks James needs to join the CFFG team to help us keep the machine in shape and stocked more frequently? We vote yes. 🙂‍↕️

As promised, we said we’d share updates on our Good Food for All machine, including the snags we hit along the way!

With our Good Food for All program, we’ve reached a few exciting milestones over the last few weeks like we’ve officially distributed over 1200 lbs of food since the machine’s launch, secured donations from new supporters, including Jacob Simon who featured us on his Hopemaker’s Project video on YT, have gotten to connect with our recipients to get their feedback, and have finally gotten to re-post our banner!

Our goal is to increase the amount of food we can distribute and to do so more regularly, but that will require repair of the machine and potentially, switching to conveyor slots, if possible.

Unfortunately, just as we were about to share this update post this week, we received word that the machine has a critical repair that has forced it to be offline for now. 💔

We’re working on getting a repair tech asap and will share updates when the system is back online. 🔔

Ep. 2 of Let’s Engineer Some Sh*t: Cooling Blanket Edition 🧊

We’re gonna craft an icy blanket using 2 thin blankets, some velcro and a few reusable ice sheets. For any folks who either dont have an ac or may not be able to afford the electric bill that comes with an ac, this is a simple diy solution that should cost you ~ $20-30. 🫡

Ice sheets: 3 pack - $12 or 6 pack - $18
Velcro: $8

If you haven’t used these ice sheets before, no worries, they’re super easy to use. 😌

We just soak this fabric side in water and you’ll see each of these cells fill up with water. Then, we pop it into the freezer. Now, we’re gonna take 2 blankets, thin throw blanket would work well, you dont need to use your thickest blankets for this. Then, we’re gonna create a middle section for cooling using our velcro. 🙂‍↕️

If you want to mark your sheets so that the line up, you can. The main thing we want is enough space to fit 3 ice sheets. If you want to use all 6 you can, but this blanket gets really cold with just one or two ice packs, so we recommend you just use the 2-3, while 3 more freeze and swap them out once the first 3 melt. 🧊

From there you’re going to place your velcro onto the blanket to create a pocket for your ice sheets. You dont need to make full rectangles, if you want to be sparing with your velcro, as long as you make sure your corners of your ice sheets are secure. Repeat the process with your second sheet and make sure the opposite velcro strips line up with the pacement of your first ones. 🤓

One thing to be mindful of, there will be some condensation after a while and it might make your sheet damp, so make sure you use your fan to help evaporate some of that condensation and cool you further in the process. ❄️

Of course, this isnt a perfect solution for hot summer months, but its an affordable, easy and reusable solution that wont hike up your energy bill. 💡

And, after testing it out ourselves, we are sure it will help beat the heat. 🌇

Ep. 1 of Let’s Engineer Some Sh*t : Mushroom Grow Chamber Edition 🍄‍🟫

Have you ever wanted to grow mushrooms at home? Maybe some lion’s mane mushies for vegan crabcakes or oyster mushrooms you can sautee and pair with a steak? 🥩

Well, here’s how to build a diy monotub for mushroom growing at home! We used Field & Forest’s mushroom cultivation kit and drew inspo from North Spore’s Youtube video on creating a DIY monotub! 💕

Next step will be to attach humidity and temperature sensors, so be sure to come back for part 2! 😌

Join Anjali for a day in the life as an AgTech Intern! 👩🏽‍💻

As an alum of Intro to AgTech Cohort 8, Anjali got to bridge her Architecture studies at NYIT with her sustainable agriculture learnings from our program and pour them into her internship experience! 👌🏽

While she teamed up with Agona to get the farm systems they built at NYIT during the program off the struggle bus and pipeline the harvests to the Bear Bites Food pantry on campus, they also worked together to bring new farm systems to the school using the farm design and 2d/3d modeling skills they gained during Intro to AgTech! 🥳

That design project is now becoming a new project build she can add to her portfolio of work and will expand on food production for the Bear Bites program. 🤞🏽

It’s great to see how students with all levels of experience and backgrounds can implement the learnings into new frontiers and we’re so excited to keep sharing updates on their progress! 🤓

Our newest client website is officially live! 🥳

NYC Mushroom Network’s new website is not just the first client-facing website our Intro to AgTech Cohort 8 alums have built, this project also served as a major milestone for a newly blooming organization whose myceliating NYC, one log at a time! 🍄

Sebastian, Karan & John absolutely delivered on this project and after a brief post-launch period to ensure the website was working out well for them, here’s what our client had to say about the development process:

“The team worked hard to build a website that professionally showcased our work, integrated an interactive map of our partners in NYC, displayed our events through an automated tooling of the Eventbrite API, and gave us a way to receive interest for our programming. Working with them was a phenomenal opportunity, the project was led with professionalism and attention to our needs, and we would be excited to partner again in the future.”

-NYC Mushroom Network 💕

If you’re a small farm, food relief or food justice organization and in need of a website, reach out to us to join our next cycle of internship matches and we’ll build you the best website for your brand! 🙏🏽
