While advocating for Ukraine in Speaker Johnson’s Congressional district 4. My first stop was at the KEEL Radio morning show “With Mike & McCarty.” Every morning, Mike Martindale and Erin McCarty talk about all the topics that matter to their community of Shreveport & Boiser City of Louisiana.
Erin and Mike know how to treat a guest and I felt right at home, as if I had never left The Pelican State. They even let me put up the Ukrainian flags all over the studio.
We covered lots of topics, the defection from the USSR, the tale of my landing in Louisiana that involved Shaq’s departure for the NBA and the great Dale Brown’s fondness for international players. Playing for LSU basketball and being coached by “The great motivator”. Eventual return to independent Ukraine and witnessing firsthand Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 as well as its barbaric invasion of my beautiful Ukraine in 2022.
I was able to share the truth about what it's like to live in the war zone in a 21st century Europe, when an oppressive, kleptocratic regime, build on lies and misinformation, led by a paranoid, former KGB operative and power-hungry dictator threatens the values and the way of life in the free world
Erin and Mike were not easy hosts, they asked probing but fair questions about prioritizing US interests, reasons why Americans should care about this war, potential for corruption and what happens to the aid after its approved.
I think I did a good job explaining these complicated topics, but most importantly was able to call on the good people of Louisiana to contact their elective representatives and to tell them to pass the aid to Ukraine.
