Sixty-five years ago, Sierra Leone took its place among the free nations of the world. April 27, 1961 marked the end of colonial rule and the beginning of a journey toward self-determination. Among those who labored and sacrificed for that historic moment was H.E. Ishmael Byne Taylor-Kamara, one of the Founding Fathers of Sierra Leone’s Independence. He was the first lawyer from Sierra Leone’s Northern Province, the first Member of Parliament for Kambia Central and the first Minister of Trade and Industry.

On this Independence Day, the IBTK Foundation and its Executive Director Ambassador Hawa Taylor-Kamara Diallo continue to do what independence demands of all of us; to invest in the people, to build from within and to ensure that the promise of April 27 reaches every young person in Sierra Leone. And in doing so they honor not just a nation but a founding father whose life was a legacy of leadership, diplomacy and service. H.E. Ishmael Byne Taylor-Kamara helped make this day possible. His name lives on in every life the Foundation touches.

Happy 65th Independence Day, Sierra Leone. 🇸🇱🎊
