Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre, New York, NY (2026)

Last month we wrapped our second hybrid creative residency (in Marseille and NYC) for the company’s newest work in progress: Shabaab. Featuring new and returning collaborators from Syria to South Africa and beyond, we are excited to introduce the incredible artists working to bring this new project to life! Stay tuned for more information on the world premiere of this new work in Fall 2026.

Mohammed Smahneh (Barges) is a self-taught hip-hop and contemporary dancer from Nablus, Palestine, a puppeteer with The Walk with Amal since 2022, and YSDT company member since 2013.

Yousef Sbieh is a Palestinian dancer and performer from Jerusalem, currently based in Copenhagen, working internationally across Europe and Palestine (and with YSDT since 2016).

Hisham Abu Jabal is a Palestinian classical guitarist and composer, trained at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, who creates music for stage and screen.

Enrico Dau Yang Wey is a Taiwanese puppetry director, choreographer, and performer, and a long-time member of Handspring Puppet Company (working with YSDT since 2024).

Sipho Ngxola is a multidisciplinary puppet designer and director from Cape Town, South Africa, and co-founder of Ukwanda Puppet Company.

Shnsho Muhanad is a Syrian architect and designer based in Marseille, working on large-scale installations while also active as a DJ and music producer.

Muaz Aljubeh is a Palestinian lighting designer from Jerusalem with decades of experience creating lighting for theatre, dance, and international productions.

في الشهر الماضي، اختتمت فرقتنا الإقامة الإبداعية الثانية للعمل الجديد قيد التطوير «شباب (Shabaab)»، والتي توزعت بين مرسيليا ونيويورك وجمعت بين العمل في الاستوديو والتعاون عن بُعد.
كانت فرصة مميزة للعودة إلى مساحة العمل والالتقاء بمجموعة من المتعاونين الجدد إلى جانب فنانين رافقونا في مراحل سابقة، وذلك بعد إقامة تطوير أولية في مركز لاغوارديا للفنون الأدائية، وعرض قُدّم في «نيويورك لايف آرتس» مطلع هذا العام.
يضم هذا المشروع فنانين من خلفيات وبلدان متعددة، من سوريا إلى جنوب أفريقيا وغيرها، يعملون معًا بروح مشتركة لتحويل هذا العمل إلى واقع حيّ. ويمكنكم التعرّف أكثر على الفريق الإبداعي من خلال منشورنا الأخير على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي.

This program supports artists using their creative practices to care for and uplift communities across New York City, with a focus on cultural solidarity and social impact. We’re proud to be among the inspiring cohort of artists contributing to meaningful, community-centered work this year.

The People’s Theatre Playwrights Unit is back for 2026, and we’re looking for bold voices ready to shape the future of theatre. 3 playwrights will be selected to develop new works under the mentorship of Marco Antonio Rodriguez and present them at the New Horizons Play Reading Festival this December.

☞ Center for Performance Research (CPR)
Deadline: May 18, 2026
Fall Movement and Spring Movement provide an opportunity for artists to present new work in dance, performance, and time-based art in a shared program, curated by an independent panel of artists through an OPEN CALL. CPR encourages applicants to submit work with experimental approaches to content, form, and aesthetic, and work that values risk-taking and the unexpected.

Meet Aya!!!
We first connected with Aya when she joined our performance "Gathering-NYC" in 2024—and from the very beginning, she brought something truly special. Leading our vocal warm-up with ease and confidence, she set the tone for the entire space, then went on to fill it with her powerful, inspiring voice.

Now, we’re excited to share that Aya has joined our teaching artist team, bringing her artistry, warmth, and expertise to the work we do together in our community engagement programs. Aya, your presence continues to inspire us—we’re so glad you’re part of this journey.

Aya Aziz is a composer and performing artist from NYC. Her work examines diaspora, power, and belonging. Her original musical, “Eh Dah? Questions for my Father”, premiered at New York Theatre Workshop’s Next Door theater in 2019. She developed the show again this winter with a class of BFA students at the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy. Aya is a graduate of The Public Theater Emerging Writer's Group, a former fellow at the Dramatists Guild Foundation, and is currently working on her debut album. When she’s not creating, she’s in a salt marsh finishing her graduate degree in environmental science.

تعرّفنا على آية لأول مرة عندما انضمت إلى عرض "جمعة" في نيويورك عام 2024 — ومنذ اللحظة الأولى، جلبت معها شيئًا مميزًا حقًا. قادت تمارين الإحماء الصوتي بثقة وسلاسة، مما وضع نغمة مميزة للمكان بأكمله، ثم ملأت الفضاء بصوتها القوي والاستثنائي.

يسعدنا أن نشارككم أن آية ستنضم إلى فريقنا التعليمي، حيث ستجلب فنها، ودفئها، وخبرتها إلى العمل الذي نقوم به معًا.

آية عزيز هي مؤلفة موسيقية وفنانة أدائية من مدينة نيويورك. تستكشف أعمالها قضايا الشتات والسلطة والانتماء. عُرض عملها الموسيقي الأصلي «إيه ده؟ أسئلة لوالدي» لأول مرة في مسرح "نكست دور" التابع لورشة مسرح نيويورك عام 2019. أعادت تطوير العرض هذا الشتاء مع طلاب برنامج البكالوريوس في الفنون الجميلة في أكاديمية الشارقة للفنون الأدائية. آية خريجة برنامج الكتّاب الناشئين في مسرح "ذا بابلك"، وزميلة سابقة في مؤسسة نقابة الكتّاب المسرحيين، وتعمل حالياً على ألبومها الأول. وعندما لا تكون منشغلة بالإبداع، يمكن العثور عليها في مستنقع ملحي تُنهي فيه دراستها العليا في علوم البيئة.

Over the course of this year, we have taken time to recognize the artists who helped shape YSDT over the past two decades. For the final artist spotlight of our 20 year anniversary season, we turn to the person at the heart of it all: Samar Haddad King, the founding Artistic Director of Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre, whose vision gave this organization its foundation and whose commitment to creating art that is liberating, transformative, and accessible to all, has defined its direction for two decades. During Arab American Heritage Month, we reflect on the work she set in motion to uplift Arab, immigrant, and refugee voices, and how it continues to resonate today.

على مدار هذا العام خصصنا وقتًا لتكريم الفنانين الذين أسهموا في تشكيل فرقة يا سمر! خلال العقدين الماضيين. وفي ختام سلسلة تسليط الضوء على الفنانين ضمن موسم الذكرى العشرين، نتوجّه إلى الشخصية المحورية في هذه المسيرة: سمر حداد كينج، المديرة الفنية المؤسسة لفرقة يا سمر! للمسرح الراقص. فقد أرست رؤيتها الأساس الذي قامت عليه هذه المؤسسة، وأسهم التزامها بإنتاج فنٍّ تحرّري وتحويلي ومتاح للجميع في رسم ملامح مسيرتها على مدى عشرين عامًا.
وخلال شهر التراث العربي الأمريكي، نستحضر العمل الذي أطلقته لدعم وتعزيز أصوات العرب والمهاجرين واللاجئين، ونرى كيف لا يزال أثره حاضرًا ومتجددًا حتى اليوم.

سمر حداد كينغ (هي)، المديرة الفنية ومؤسسة فِرْقَة يا سمر! للمسرح الراقص. حاصلة على تقدير امتياز من معهد Ailey في جامعة فوردهام في نيويورك حيث درست تحت إشراف مصممة الرقص كازوكو هيراباياشي.عُرضت أعمال سمر في اكثر من 21 دولة وصممت الرقص للعديد من الفرق والمهرجانات في الولايات المتحدة والعالم منها : مهرجان هون كونغ للفنون (هون كونغ)، هابرد ستريت 2 (شيكاغو)، و Palest’In and Out Festival ( باريس)، ومهرجان رام الله للرقص المعاصر(رام الله)، وعرض المسار في انز ويرهاوس (نيويورك)، مسرح جود شانس ( مرسيليا) The Herds( باريس). حاصلة على عدد من الجوائز منها: جائزة الفنان الفلسطيني الشاب من مهرجان Palest’In and OUT في باريس، وإقامة فنية في Chaillot - théâtre national de la Danse في باريس، وزمالة وإقامة فنية في مركز الباليه والفنون (CBA) في جامعة نيويورك، ولقب Toulmin Creater من مركز الباليه والفنون. كما وحصلت على جائزة Creative Capital Wild Futures: الفن والثقافة والتأثير لعام 2023 عن مشروعها الجديد متعدد التخصصات "Radio Act".

Join us as we honor Arab American and SWANA Heritage Month with a special community event in partnership with Noor Theatre! On April 21st, we're hosting a free Open Mic Night and reception to uplift the incredible talent in our community. During so much suffering in the Arab World and beyond, it’s more important than ever to come together in community - not as an escape, but as a reminder of who we are and as a way to stay connected to our joy.

Doors open at 6:30 PM; program begins at 7:00 PM. Please be sure to complete the RSVP form whether or not you plan to perform, and if you’d like to perform, please indicate so in the form. Participation will be limited to the first 15 artists to respond, with a 5 minute cap on material. Light refreshments will be provided. We hope to see you there for an evening of culture, community, and celebration!

في ظل ما يمرّ به العالم العربي ومناطق أخرى من أزمات ومعاناة، تزداد حاجتنا إلى التلاقي والتكاتف داخل مجتمعنا. فاجتماعنا ليس هروبًا من الواقع، بل هو تأكيد لهويتنا وتشبّث بما يجمعنا، وطريقة نحافظ بها على صلتنا بمصادر الفرح والأمل فينا.

We’re honored to be recipients of New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, 2026 NYC Cultural Development Fund (CDF)!! Art and culture are the heart and soul of New York, and we’re proud to be among the nearly 1,200 groups receiving city support this year thanks to the partnership between the NYC Mayor’s Office and the City Council. This investment in our work will help us bring accessible, affordable cultural programs to our community. Our CDF grant will support our education programs in New York City public schools, and community based organizations across three boroughs!

☞ globalFEST
Deadline: April 15, 2026
One of the most dynamic global music platforms, selecting 10 highly curated, outstanding, tour-ready artists to perform full sets before hundreds of industry professionals on three stages at Geffen Hall, NYC, in January 2027.

☞ Accent Dance NYC
Deadline: April 17, 2026
Commission for one early-career, NYC-based choreographer to create a new work. Process begins spring/summer with flexible rehearsals. The work will be presented in educational programs, community events, and performances. Includes $3,000–$5,000, rehearsal space, dancer fees, audition and scheduling support, premiere, and marketing.

☞ Works & Process
Deadline: April 21, 2026
Invites NYC-based dance artists/companies (up to 8 artists) for 7-day residencies. Supports the creative process, with each artist receiving $175/day ($1,225/week).

☞ The Democracy Cycle
Deadline: April 28, 2026
A commissioning program supporting new works exploring democracy across theater, dance, music, opera, and multidisciplinary performance. Each project receives $60,000 ($30,000 commission + $30,000 development), with at least eight projects funded per round.

YSDT artist Mohammed Smahneh (aka Barges) will lead a workshop in Dabke - a method of folkloric dance from the Levant - blending contemporary dance and theatre with traditional Dabke technique. Open to all levels and abilities.

Community Dinner will follow from 6:30-8pm.

In the face of ongoing violence and erasure increasingly facing our communities, we are proud to continue our commitment to providing free and low cost education programs that center Arab, immigrant, and system-impacted communities, and empower participants with tools for creative expression. This spring, our incredible team of teaching artists are actively engaging youth across New York City and Palestine with dabke, contemporary dance, creative practice and other workshops. These programs aim to: validate the individual through empowered choice-making, center the power of storytelling in pursuit of social justice, and model the power of collective action by honoring diverse perspectives and a multiplicity of bodies, abilities, and experiences. New York City community partners include: City As School, KIPP Beyond Charter School, Arab American Family Support Center, and Recess, with programs in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens; while in Palestine we are partnering with Yabous Cultural Center in Jerusalem.
