"Every testimony, every story carries the weight of history and the responsibility to bear witness. By capturing and sharing these experiences through film, we ensure that future generations will not only learn what happened but will understand the human cost of hatred and the enduring strength of those who lived through it. This is how memory becomes legacy” - Greg Schneider, Claims Conference EVP.

"Now a dire warning from history” – Amanpour & Company.

On Wednesday, April 15, the STRENGTH OF COURAGE film series is in Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Branch. The film “Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny” will be followed by a discussion with Jeff Bieber, the film’s co-director; Roger Stuart Berkowitz, founder and Academic Director of the Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities; and Ruth Weinberger, a Claims Conference historian. The panel will be moderated by former NBC News’ chief political analyst Chuck Todd.

"'Hannah Arendt - Facing Tyranny' is a welcoming edition of professionally made documentaries that investigates the origins of totalitarian movements. And with a coherent structure and relevant footage that closely follows in her footsteps, the documentary succeeds in giving us a thorough journey into the life of Hannah Arendt and presents us with the historical surroundings that shaped her thoughts and Jewish identity” - Jesper Isaksen, Copenhagen Headliner Film Festival.

The special event begins at 2 pm. Register for free at: bklynlibrary.org/bpl-presents

“I am not a politician; that is my strength” – Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel.

Oren Rudavsky’s film “Elie Wiesel – Soul on Fire” asks: What drove Elie Wiesel throughout his life to be such a powerful voice for human rights? What were the dilemmas he struggled with? How can the lessons he drew from the Holocaust be applied to today’s hostile world, where authoritarian leaders threaten to destroy fragile societies and where memory of the Holocaust has faded?

“We were starving, and if you told me I could have a piece of bread but then be killed, I would still have the piece of bread.”

Holocaust survivor David Moskovic was liberated from Buchenwald on April 11, 1945.

His family was taken from their village of Konus, Slovakia, to Auschwitz in May of 1944, where David, his father and brother were put in one line and his mother in another. The three men were sent to forced labor; his mother was sent to the gas chambers.

In January 1945, a week before the death camp was liberated, David, his father and his brother were sent on a death march. David was the only one to survive.

He arrived in Buchenwald shortly afterwards, surviving a ride in a cattle car following the death march.

David’s sister Edith also survived the Holocaust.

“I wish my parents could see what I did in my life. That would have been my biggest pleasure.”

After returning to his village of Konus after the end of World War 2, Holocaust survivor David Moskovic found that his family’s home had been taken over. He had nothing, and there was nothing left for him there.

With the help of a cousin in another town, he got a job working for a plumber.

In 1948, he went to Salzburg, from where he immigrated to Ottawa. After years of working, he opened his own successful plumbing business.

“I enjoy my life. I have three children and eight grandchildren. Life is beautiful, really.”

“I never got to say goodbye to my family. My heart is the cemetery.” — Sally Muschel
Sally Muschel was 11 or 12 years old when her parents made the impossible decision to send her away in 1939. Sick with typhoid, she was sent east and later placed on a transport to Siberia, where she survived for three years.
After the war, Sally learned that her father had been shot by the N**is for refusing to head the Judenrat in Dombrowa, and her mother was murdered in Auschwitz. She never saw them again.
Hundreds of thousands of Jews fled or were deported east into the Soviet Union during the war, where many endured extreme conditions, forced labor, and displacement to survive.
Now 100 years old, Sally recently shared her story with students at New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn, ensuring that her family’s memory lives on.
Invite a Survivor Speaker to your school or community and hear history from someone who lived it.
