Earth Day Initiative

Earth Day Initiative Our mission is to carry the enthusiasm & spirit of Earth Day into the 21st Century to meet today's environmental challenges. Visit our site to learn more.

We are a 501(c)3 founded under the name Earth Day New York doing business as Earth Day Initiative. Earth Day began in 1970 when a perfect storm of public awareness, political will, and dedicated activism converged to create one of the largest demonstrations in human history. More than 10,000 events engaged 20 million people across America. Everyone from housewives to Hollywood actors took part in

the first Earth Day events. Over the years, Earth Day has continued as an annual call to action from classrooms to board rooms. The inclusiveness of the first Earth Day has only grown as Earth Day events have spread around the world. Our organization was founded by a broad coalition of environmental groups to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Earth Day in New York City in 1990. We organized the largest event ever held in Central Park and every year since then have organized large-scale events in landmark locations. We have also grown into year-round programs and partnerships that all aim to bring the enthusiasm and spirit of Earth Day into our daily lives to meet the environmental challenges of the 21st Century. Visit our site today to join the Virtual Climate March.

Join us and Earth Day Initiative board member Alysia Reiner on May 27 for a sneak peak at Alfalfa, a dynamic eco-noir thriller set against the backdrop of the fast-developing, parched American West, from award-winning Director Jack Fessenden.

"In this Altman-esque tale of a desert community ravaged by water scarcity, every drop counts, and people's choices matter. An indie movie for the Landman audience, ALFALFA is a case study for bold, entertaining storytelling with an impact."

Thank you to everyone who showed up for Earth Day 2026 in NYC and around the world!

A special thank you to our partners at Okamoto Studio who brought our “Melting Good” art installation to life. The piece is meant to represent the interconnectedness of our challenges. From the looming climate crisis to threats to our democracy, we are all in this together. Our challenges are interwoven and so are the solutions.

Stay tuned for more events and programs this year. We’ll see you soon!

After a fire damaged parts of Prospect Park last year, it served as a reminder of how vital this green space is to Brooklyn. The park is home to Brooklyn’s last remaining upland forest, a critical habitat for native wildlife and a peaceful refuge for millions of visitors each year.

Con Edison contributed to fire restoration and other rewilding efforts to help restore the park and ensure it continues to provide shade and cooling, and be an accessible green space for generations to come.
