As we close out our Reentry Awareness Month series, we’re sharing one more story of what it means to come home and build something different.

The story of Nathan Barnwell.

While incarcerated, he took part in Osborne's FamilyWork program, a 13-week parenting class that reshaped how he connected with his children, helping him better understand their experiences and rebuild those relationships.

When he came home, Nathan came directly to Osborne’s Fulton Community Reentry Center, where he joined programs, built community, and began supporting others. Today, he’s working, continuing his education, and has custody of his son.

Nathan is now giving that same support to his peers navigating reentry, as a Case Manager at Osborne's Marcus Garvey Supportive Housing Program.

The connection and bond to a loved one doesn't end when someone is incarcerated. But distance and cost often make it harder to maintain connections. At Osborne, we understand this and work to alleviate the burdens of loved ones trying to remain connected. That’s why we created Loved Ones Link, our free transportation program operated in partnership with NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, offering bus service from New York City, Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse to over a dozen state prisons.

On Get Connected with Nina Del Rio 106.7 Lite FM, Osborne’s Michelle Howard and Tiffany Myrick discuss how the program works and how it helps families and their incarcerated loved ones.

We celebrated the opening of the Marcus Garvey II Supportive Housing Program on April 21, which provides 88 units of permanent supportive housing for older adults returning from incarceration.

“We launched Marcus Garvey to serve as a bright light for our residents as they navigate a new world outside prison,” said our CEO, Jon Monsalve. The event brought together partners, leaders, and community members to mark this milestone, with testimonials from residents Devone Sanders and Carmela Cintron.

Thanks to our partners at the New York State Housing Finance Agency, New York State Homes and Community Renewal, New York City Housing Preservation and Development, and L+M Development Partners, and to Brooklyn Deputy Borough President Kim Council, representatives from the office of Assemblywoman Latrice Walker, and Deanna Logan, Director of MOCJ, for joining us.

The celebration concluded with a tour led by Marcus Garvey staff, where guests explored the building and spoke with residents.

We’re continuing our Reentry Awareness Month series, highlighting the stories of people who have come home after experiencing incarceration.

This year’s theme focuses on unlocking the potential of 1 in 3 American adults with a criminal record by removing barriers to reentry and supporting real opportunities for restoration.

Keonnie is one of them.

After more than 30 years of incarceration, Keonnie came home ready to build a new path. Through Osborne’s Community Justice Reentry Network program, he completed job readiness training and reentered the workforce after decades away. Today, he is employed through Osborne’s Janitorial Program and has secured stable housing.

Keonnie is also making an impact beyond his own journey. He speaks with young people about gun violence and mental health, drawing from his lived experience to connect with the younger generation and encourage them.

His story illustrates what reentry can look like when people have the support and opportunity to rebuild.

Weekday prison visits are expanding across New York State.

Starting April 29, partial weekday, in-person visitation will resume at additional maximum-security facilities:

Wednesdays: Attica, Auburn, Clinton, Coxsackie, Eastern NY, Five Points, Sing Sing, Wende
Thursdays: Elmira

These facilities join Bedford Hills, Green Haven, and Shawangunk, where weekday visits had already resumed.

With this update, all maximum-security facilities that previously offered weekday visits will now provide at least one weekday visiting opportunity in addition to weekend visits.

Yesterday, we announced the release of, Engaging Youth Voices, at the national Children of Incarcerated Parents conference in Arizona!

This new guide offers a clear framework for ethical storytelling and provides recommendations to organizations and young people on sharing the experiences of youth with incarcerated parents.

It's rooted in dignity, care, and shared power.

Check out some quotes from the guide's youth contributors below.

Young people who have experienced the incarceration of a parent are often asked to share their stories—with reporters and policymakers, at fundraisers, and in advocacy campaigns. But too often, they’re asked to do so without real control, support, or say in how those stories are shaped.

We can do better.

Osborne Association’s new guide, Engaging and Empowering Youth Voices, sets a new standard—grounded in dignity and consent. It has sections for young people and for adults who collaborate with them.

Developed with youth leaders, it lays out clear guidance:
✔️ You can change your mind—at any time
✔️ You should be paid for your time
✔️ You help shape how your story is told
✔️ You deserve support before and after sharing

Young people are experts in their own experiences. Let's support them to share those experience with intention and purpose.

📢 UPDATE ON PRISON VISITING

A broad coalition of organizations from across New York State is calling on the DOCCS commissioner to restore holiday visits by Memorial Day and weekday visiting by the end of June. This follows more than a year with no holiday visits and weekday visits at all but three maximum security facilities.

At the same time:
• The Governor’s FY27 Executive Budget proposes $535 million for the National Guard, whose assistance should allow for at least a partial reopening of visiting
• DOCCS released its first report on body scanners, finding no instances of drugs or suspicion of drugs related to visits
• The Correctional Body Scanner Standards Act, introduced by Senator Salazar and Assemblymember Souffrant Forrest, would establish clear procedures and standards for how body scanners are used on staff and visitors

Restoring visits is critical for families and communities across New York.
