May is Women’s Health Month! This month dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of women’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It encourages women to prioritize preventive care, stay informed about health risks, and adopt healthy habits such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and routine medical and dental checkups. The month also highlights the need for equitable access to health care and education, empowering women to take an active role in their long-term health and wellness.

This week is National Nurses Week! Ending on nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale's birthday on May 12, this week provides the opportunity to reflect on the incomparable strength nurses, nurse practitioners and nurse midwives demonstrate every day.

OHNEP recognizes nurses' powerful professionalism and dedication to improving the health of patients, families and communities across the nation. Since 2011, OHNEP has created effective and successful interprofessional tools for nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives and other health professionals to incorporate oral-systemic health into education and practice settings. These tools include our faculty tool kits, case studies, oral health fact sheets, and blog posts, along with resources from our collaborations with the National League for Nursing (NLN) and Smiles for Life. Explore these and many other innovative oral health resources at our OHNEP website - https://ohnep.org

We are eternally grateful for the unwavering commitment of the nursing profession to providing high-quality whole person care, including oral health care. We thank all nurses and our nursing oral health champions that have made a tremendous difference in our lives!

It's World Autism Month, an annual observation that seeks to promote acceptance and appreciation of people with autism. Every April, people all over the world celebrate neurodiversity, advocate for inclusive communities, and highlight the unique experiences and talents of individuals on the autism spectrum.

Providing quality oral health care for people can be complex due to sensory sensitivities, communication styles, and anxiety related to dental visits. Primary health care professionals in dental and medical spaces can take simple steps to create inclusive spaces, including training for staff on communication styles and sensory-friendly strategies for patients with autism.

We invite you to visit our OHNEP website, ohnep.org, to review our Autism and Dental Anxiety Case Studies, along with the resources included in our Undergraduate, Pediatric NP and Psychiatric Mental Health NP Tool Kits!

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity for all health care providers to heighten their awareness about the importance of oral cancer prevention. In the US, mouth cancers are diagnosed in over 100 people each day, and someone dies from oral cancer every hour of every day. Health care professionals are part of the first line of defense in detecting oral cancer in its early stages. Beyond the dental office, oral cancer screenings should be conducted by health professionals including nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives, physicians, and physician assistants.

We encourage you to take time this month to learn more about HPV and oral cancer. Check out the Oral Health Literacy and Resources sections at OHNEP.org to learn about the importance of the HPV vaccine in protecting oral health!

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM), providing us with the opportunity to explore both the challenges and progress of the developmental disabilities community in achieving health equity. This year's theme, "We're Here: Then, Now, Always," builds on the success of last year's theme, "We’re Here All Year." This month, we reflect on how far the disability community has come and why continued advocacy efforts have strengthened the commitment to inclusion and community living. Individuals with developmental disabilities are valuable members of our communities and deserve full participation in all aspects of life, including education, employment, recreation, and civic engagement.

DDAM is dedicated to raising awareness of the barriers people with developmental disabilities face in connecting with their communities. These individuals and families often struggle to find accessible oral and primary health care and specialty services that align with their needs. Oral care is often neglected among people with disabilities, contributing to serious negative oral and overall health outcomes. Oral health professionals have made advances in improving access for patients with developmental disabilities. While health care services for individuals with developmental disabilities have improved, more oral health champions are needed to improve oral care in all communities!

"The economic consequences of oral disorders at global, regional, and national levels" from BMC Oral Health assesses the global macroeconomic impact of oral diseases across 192 countries in 2021. The study quantifies the global macroeconomic burden of common oral diseases—such as untreated dental caries, periodontal disease, and edentulism—using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and the Value of Lost Welfare (VLW) model.

Oral disorders resulted in an estimated $234.3 billion in lost global welfare, and the economic impact varied significantly by region, with Central/Eastern Europe and Central Asia showing the highest relative burden and sub-Saharan Africa the lowest. The authors conclude that these substantial losses highlight the need to better integrate oral health into universal health coverage and non-communicable disease policy agendas.

Today is National Fluoride Day! This day provides an opportunity to recognize the importance of fluoride in protecting teeth and preventing tooth decay for patients of all ages. Fluoride strengthens teeth and prevents tooth decay, and can even help rebuild tooth surfaces in the early stages of tooth decay. Along with being a key ingredient in most oral care products, safe amounts of fluoride are also commonly added to public water supplies to help prevent tooth decay and improve oral health in communities across the US.

Check out this exceptional fact sheet from NIDCR with fast facts on fluoride: https://shorturl.at/qk9PN
