The Life Planning Network

The Life Planning Network National Professional Organization serving professionals whose work focuses on the third age, second half of life, or midlife and beyond

Life planning is a guided process by which an individual takes stock of his or her life, clarifies goals and challenges, and identifies the steps needed to move forward. A life planning professional can help address relevant issues and find resources - people and information - needed for a successful transition. Life planning is often collaborative because life issues cross more than one disciplin

e. As a result, individuals may need to work with more than one professional, including financial planners, attorneys, coaches, counselors and other professionals. Ideally, the professional with whom an individual initially meets will introduce them to others and will coordinate the work they do on the client's behalf. Members of the Life Planning Network support this kind of integrated working relationship, which should help individuals achieve a more comprehensive, successful life transition.

October 19, 2012, 8:30 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.

Topic: Former Boston Globe columnist, Ellen Goodman, is embarking on an ambitious national campaign to have every person's end of life preferences expressed and respected.

At our Fall quarterly meeting, Martha Hayward, lead for public and patient engagement at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), will tell us about the campaign and will challenge us to explore the essences of The Conversation Project for our life and work.

The presentation and follow-up morning and afternoon discussions, first-hand stories and integrative exercises will give us a chance to embrace a broad range of profound questions such as how we define "end of life," how we balance the concerns of prospective care recipients and caregivers in end of life conversations, and how we create the space for deep conversations about life and death with our families and clients. Useful for our clients, LPN practitioners and professionals in related fields.

Cost: Members and first-time guests: $20
(includes continental breakfast & lunch / portable lunch in case you have to leave at 12:30 p.m.)
Second-time Guests: $35

Chesapeake Sept. 12 Teleseminar: 10 Must Have Conversations for the Second Half of Life
We are living longer and the concept of retirement is changing. Many people can't afford to retire and others don't want to stop working. Our belief is that it's less important what you're retiring FROM and more important to figure out what you're retiring TO.

Finding solutions can be more complicated for couples who may have different values, interests and priorities. Here are some critical conversations: if, when and how to retire, changing roles and identity, expectations of time together and apart, finances, health and wellness, relationships with family, where to live and how to find community and purpose.

Join us as Roberta Taylor and Dori Mintzer share their book's model and lead a discussion of how these conversations can be helpful for yourself and/or your clients. We'll also explore ways we can play advocacy roles in helping people at midlife begin to focus on "what's next?" and become more intentional in planning their next stage of life.

Dori Mintzer, M.S.W., Ph.D. BCC and Roberta Taylor, RNCS, M. Ed, BCC, co-authors of The Couple's Retirement Puzzle: 10 Must- Have Conversations for Transitioning to the Second Half of Life, are both psychotherapists, coaches, consultants, writers and speakers. Both are members of the National Speakers Association and the New England Life Planning Network. Although written for couples, the book is structured to be helpful for individuals, since each person needs to "puzzle out" the issues for themselves.

Registration is required. Call will be recorded if you cannot attend.

Chesapeake Life Planning Network July 13 Quarterly In-Person Meeting
Nurturing the Older Brain and Mind”

Drs. Pamela Greenwood and Raja Parasuraman, Professors at George Mason University, will give a brief presentation of their recent book “Nurturing the Older Brain and Mind.” Recent evidence has overturned the long held view that brain aging is inevitable and that we only lose brain cells as we age, not grow them.

Neurogenesis, the growth of new neurons, occurs in all adults, including older adults. We will learn about environmental and lifestyle factors that promote brain plasticity so that we can maintain cognitive vitality as we age. Join us for a lively discussion on ways to promote your brain health.
