New York (link in my bio)- Daniel Fetecua Productions with support of iD Studio Theater invites you to the event Dance to Embrace. These three evenings of dance performances will be part of the Giving Light Exhibition presented by Beverly Emers at Bronx Art Space. Dance to Embrace is composed of three dance works “Bella Vista Project”, “Holding for Embrace” and “The Tongue of The Flame” produced and conceived by Daniel Fetecua, an acclaimed choreographer and performer who mines his identity and experiences to create multidisciplinary performances.

Dance to Embrace takes place from Thursday, March 25th to Saturday, March 27th, at Bronx Art Space at 7:30 p.m. each day. The performances will be for a safely distanced audience of no more than 20 people and masks will be required.

ABOUT GIVING LIGHT EXHIBITION:

Giving Light is an event curated by Beverly Emers at Bronx Art Space that exhibits diverse forms of expression that will provoke thought, emotion, conversation, and a call to action around gun violence. Conversations will contribute to memorializing victims, coping with trauma, and the impact of gun violence in communities of color. The curator of the event desires to lift up the public health issue while providing a space to mourn, uplift, educate and embrace, and empowering community members and attendees to get involved.

ABOUT DANCE TO EMBRACE:

Dance to Embrace will be part of the events presented during the Giving Light Event. The public will be able to witness three different performances that highlight the topics behind this exhibition. 1- Bella Vista Project 2012 (reconstruction) 2- The Tongue of The Flame (2021), 3- Holding for Embrace (2020).

Last class with summer workshop for now :-) We build this variation over this week and below are the phrase counts. I’m sharing this because I want to point out how important is what we do as artists, as dancers, serious dance takes time and understanding of our bodies and mind. Changing timings and directions and to have an understanding of a technique and then dance it as like we are just going through.... looks like “easy” but it takes time... a lot of time and process. I thank all my students for working with me and being open to this process that is so inspiring as a teacher, as a human. Let’s appreciate more dance and support it! Let’s appreciate teachers and dancers that really have the heart to work hard, again, work hard and become artists! So here the counts: 1,2,3,4. 1,2,3 1,2,3 1,2. 1,2,3 1,2,3, 1,2,3 1,2,3 1,2. 1,2,3 1,2,3 1,2. 1,2,3 1,2,3 1,2. 1,2,3 1,2,3 1,2. 1,2,3,4 1,2. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. 13 times 3’s with hand gestures, the next three movements (some of what we did before) are free in time as there is a “Calderon” in the music then fall in the down bit, rebound, and turn in right knee and both shoulders. Now.... GO!!!

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION:
One of the ‘signature’ choreographic works by Daystar/Rosalie Jones is a dance titled “Wolf: A Transformation”. Inspired by the Anishinaabe traditional story of the wolf as the “first companion of the first man” as written by Elder Edward Benton Benai, this dance has been in turn gifted to dancer Daniel Fetecua in order to carry it forward to the people. The choreography itself is highly dependent on the magic of transformation through the use of masking. A video of the dance will be shown, following by a discussion of artistic creativity and collaboration with Hopi sculptor Timothy Talawepi who created the masks, 3-D artist Olivia Kim who sculpted the wolf head piece and dancer Daniel Fetecua.

ABOUT DANCING EARTH:
DANCING EARTH has been named by Dance Magazine as “One of the Top 25 to Watch,” and are recipients of the National Museum of American Indian’s 2010 Expressive Arts Award. Dancing Earth recruits, cultivates, and creates opportunities for emerging global Indigenous talents in all aspects of artistic collaboration in every aspect of artistic collaboration - including dance, choreography, music, costume, lighting, video, stage managing, and arts administration.

BELLA VISTA PROJECT (Español abajo)
Today May 2nd is the 18th anniversary of the massacre of Bojaya in the pacific coast of Colombia. When I made this a piece my heart was aching from the simple fact that the Afro and native communities couldn’t just live, just be in peace in their own land. Yesterday I had a zoom meeting and it was great to hear and see the large community that throughout the years has been supporting the people of the Atrato river. I would love to share the full length of this piece premier in 2012, remember and acknowledge the beautiful and powerful humans that jump in this canoe the belive in this project. Thank you also to all the sponsors and supporters.
To the people of Bella Vista I send my warm thoughts and love so thy you continue to be strong and fight for your rights, for the land and for the future of a wonderful and powerful culture.
