Volunteer Spotlight: Jess

Jess began volunteering with LUNGevity in 2008 when her dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. That year opened her eyes to how many people in her circle have had, or are caring for someone with lung cancer.

When asked about her volunteer work with LUNGevity, Jess says, "I love the sense of community I feel at LUNGevity events. I have made lifelong friends through volunteering-some I consider like family. We may not see each other but once or twice a year, but we are united in our dedication to bettering the outcomes for those with lung cancer. Even if it's just a cup of coffee and a hug at our Breath Deep Walks, those connections mean so much."

If you are thinking about getting involved as a volunteer with LUNGevity, Jess has a few words of advice. "Let down your guard. Open up and share why you are interested in volunteering. Chances are someone else has been through something similar and can relate to and/or support you in some way. You might just get the time and energy you put into volunteering back tenfold. I know I did!"

What's up next for Jess? She is making her endurance debut with Team LUNGevity, powered by Daiichi Sankyo! We'll be cheering for you, Jess!

Our very own superstar, Alisa!

Our very own superstar, Alisa!

First diagnosed 22 years ago as a single mother raising 2 young twin boys, Alisa was scared and had no family to help. She is the 4th generation in her family to get lung cancer. After a lobectomy and treatment, she was considered “No Evidence of Disease” until 2014.

Since then, she found out she was EGFR Deletion 19, had a biopsy confirming adenocarcinoma, a wedge resection of the 8 mm nodule, and was considered Stage 1. Thankfully caught early, she didn't need any systemic treatment afterwards. Biomarker testing showed a small percentage of KRAS G12C and she has other small synchronous primaries throughout her lungs which have remained stable for over 15 years. All in all, Alisa considers herself very lucky and grateful to have had many years without a problem. She is taking it one day at a time.

Alisa would like to tell someone newly diagnosed with lung cancer that cancer is a word, not a sentence. As a longtime survivor, she has seen amazing advances over the years.

When asked what gives Alisa hope, she said, " My community of survivors give me hope. The strength and spirit I witness humbles me in a way I can't begin to describe. I have seen friends go from cancer all throughout their body to NED. I have seen so many advances over the years … all of these give me HOPE!"

Thank you, Alisa, for being an inspiration and advocate for the lung cancer community.
