The Sunrisers Drum & Bugle Corps family mourns the loss of one of our own, Joseph โButchโ Verlezza.
A proud member of the Sunrisers Hall of Fame, Class of 2001, Joeโs impact on this corps spanned generations. His involvement with the Sunrisers stretched from the 1960s through 2018, and he remained a devoted โFriend of the Corpsโ in the years that followed.
He joined the Sunrisers in the 1960s (after a period of time with the Wanderers Drum Corps) as a member of the hornline, playing French Horn/Mellophone, and quickly became part of the foundation that built our identity. Over the decades, his commitment never ended. He was a member, and throughout the years held the positions of an administrator, director, and board member.
Joe was Sunrisers through and through.
He believed in the values that define this corps. Dedication, tradition, and above all, excellence. He demanded the best from those around him because he gave nothing less himself.
To so many, Joe was more than a leader, he was a constant presence. His voice, his expectations, and passion for the Sunrisers will echo for years to come.
Born on October 17, 1945, in the Bronx, Joe known to many as โButchโ carried that same strength and personality into every aspect of his life. A gifted architect for over 40 years, he approached his work and his life with the same precision, creativity, and pride he brought to the Sunrisers. Above all, he was devoted to his family, whose lives were impacted by his generosity, loyalty, and unmistakable sense of humor.
Joe passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with his daughters by his side. He is survived by his wife of 42 years and their daughters, JoAnna and Brittany.
