A special thank you to Connolly’s Corner in Maspeth for inviting us for dinner last night in memory of our fallen members. A special thank you to Chief Connolly and the staff of Connolly’s Corner for having us last night. For anyone who doesn’t know the story:
September 10, 2001 — Connolly’s Corner, Maspeth, Queens
Twenty-five years ago tonight, Connolly’s Corner opened its doors and back room to a group of FDNY firefighters for what seemed like an ordinary Monday night.
The kitchen at Squad 288/HazMat 1 was out of service, so Connolly’s welcomed the members in for dinner. Shortly afterward, members of Rescue 4 and Ladder 163 asked if they could use the back room to work on the design for their Father’s Day memorial shirt. The answer from Connolly’s was simple: “Of course — more the merrier.”
That night, roughly 50–60 firefighters gathered at Connolly’s, eating dinner, watching the Giants play the Packers on Monday Night Football, laughing together, and working to finish the shirt. Nobody in that room could have imagined what the next morning would bring.
For many of those men, it would be their last dinner together.
The shirt was completed that night inside Connolly’s Corner. In the words of Pat Connolly, it became the most sacred shirt ever made for him and his brother because of where and when it was finished.
Twenty-five years later, Connolly’s Corner continues to honor the men who were there that night, keeping their names, their stories, and their memory alive.
A neighborhood restaurant became part of FDNY history simply by opening its doors to the brothers.
September 10, 2001 — a night that will never be forgotten.
September 11, 2001 — names we will never stop saying.
Never Forget. 🇺🇸
