Hear directly from Bryan Lin, composer of "Quiet Night", as he discusses his meditative contemplation about home and family, with original text by 8th-century poet Li Bai.

*** COMPOSER SPOTLIGHT ***

Bryan Lin is a Taiwanese-American conductor and composer based in New York City. His work bridges the path between tradition and innovation while seeking to build community and inspire social action. Bryan finds the intersection of his passions in choral music and musical leadership. Since 2023, he has been an active member of C4: The Choral Composer/Conductor Collective in New York City, where he chairs the Conducting Committee in addition to singing and composing. Previous conducting appointments include Mannes School of Music, Adelphi University, and The Dessoff Choirs. Bryan holds degrees in composition from Lehigh University and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and will be starting his doctorate in Choral Conducting at The Hartt School this fall.

Two days and twenty years ago, the Choral Composer/Conductor Collective made its world debut! Described as “a unique new chorus that is directed and operated collectively by its singing members, it functions not only as a presenting ensemble in its own right but also as an ongoing workshop and recital chorus for the emerging composers and conductors who form the core of the group.” Hear about the experience first-hand from C4 in-house composer George Wright in “My first C4 concert”.

*** COMPOSER SPOTLIGHT***

George is a graduate of Loyola University in New Orleans and the New England Conservatory in Boston. He has been active in New York as a composer and singer since 1996, having contributed as both to such ensembles as the Gregg Smith Singers, the SEM Ensemble, the Choir at Trinity Wall Street and Anti-Social Music. His compositions have been performed at the Aspen Music Festival, The Five Seasons String Festival, and The Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music summer concert series.

Ever found yourself wondering why women and pockets just don’t mesh? Join C4 on June 19th and 20th to explore the question on everyone’s mind with in-house composer Mario Gullo’s “Why We Oppose Pockets for Women”, conducted by Hannah Cai Sobel (we love getting the perfect take without knowing we got the perfect take 😄)

*** COMPOSER SPOTLIGHT***

“Gullo’s bright, smart music balances modern savvy and timeless optimism” sums up C4’s experience working on this piece. Mario Gullo is a composer and performer currently singing baritone with C4, and his music has been performed by the New York City Master Chorale, Bethel University Chorus, the Larchmont Avenue Church Chancel Choir, Bridges Vocal Ensemble, Opera Elect, the Cantine Quartet, Church of the Epiphany Evensong Singers, the OLL Players, Infinitus, as well as C4!

Here at C4, we are very fortunate to be able to work directly with our composers, even those who are not in-house members! Max Vinetz is one of three winners of our IGNITE Competition, and was able to visit the group in rehearsals last week to go over his piece “dog swims underwater”. The 6-part poem by Welsh-Scottish writer Euan Tait illustrates the relationship dynamic between a dog, yearning to be free, and its abusive owner, who we know as “rageman.” Rageman kicks and injures the dog, breaking bones and causing the animal to bleed. But rather than hate rageman, the dog simply wants to live and be free, a tale of true resilience. Stick around till the end of the video to hear a sneak peak!

*** COMPOSER SPOTLIGHT ***

With music described as “accomplished and appealing” (San Diego Story) and “shimmering…euphoric” (Chicago Classical Review), Max Vinetz is an award-winning composer whose music thrives at the intersection of improvisatory, popular, and traditional classical forms, exploring how these convergences shape and reflect identity transformation over time. Max’s works have been performed and recorded by JACK Quartet, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Alarm Will Sound, TAK ensemble, Bergamot Quartet, arx Duo, Stare at the Sun, Bearthoven, Théo Ould, Vicky Chow, Contemporaneous, DITHER, Hub New Music, Variant 6, Sō Percussion, Bakken Ensemble, institut .abeceda, Hashtag Ensemble, The Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra, Arditti Quartet, Ensemble Dal Niente, Miranda Cuckson, NUNC, Ensemble for New Music Tallinn, Hear&Now, Music from Copland House, Texas Medical Center Orchestra, DeCoda, Mivos Quartet, unassisted fold, Yale Symphony Orchestra, New York Youth Symphony, Icarus Duo, members of Yale Voxtet, and Yale Schola Cantorum, among others.
