VOW began with an observation—and an idea.

Human rights activist Mabel van Oranje had seen that many grassroots organizations working to end child marriage were chronically underfunded.

Then, at a friend’s wedding, the couple asked guests to donate instead of giving traditional gifts.

Mabel saw the possibility immediately: what if the joy and generosity surrounding weddings could help girls around the world choose their own futures?

With Darren Walker, she transformed that idea into VOW for Girls.

🌿 The Strongest Solutions Start Within Communities.

This International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we celebrate Indigenous women and girls—and the local leaders creating lasting change in their own communities.

In Patulul, Guatemala, Unidad de Mujeres en Desarrollo began with four women demanding justice. Today, eight leaders representing five communities are protecting the rights of girls and adolescents, leading reproductive health workshops, amplifying women's voices, and working to establish a safe house for women and girls.

At VOW, we believe the people closest to the challenges are also closest to the solutions. That's why we invest in community-based organizations with the knowledge, trust, and leadership to create lasting change.
