We had a blast during the talk with Anastasiya Tarasenko on Apr 20, 2024. It is hard to express how much fun we had learning about the artist and her stories, inspirations, and journey—such a dynamo and free-spirited person with a deep, beautiful soul.

We are grateful for Monya Rowe Gallery's hospitality and Krystyna Lysova's photography. Of course, we would like to thank all attendees for their participation.

Thanks to two generous and extraordinary women, Rosina and Maria, my heart is filled with joy and gratitude. I was honored to participate in the luncheon celebrating the friendship of two artists, Anna Walinska and Louise Nevelson.

Anna and Louise both have Ukrainian heritage. Louise [Leah Berliawsky] was born in Pereyasliv, a small but renowned town in the Kyiv oblast. Anna's mother, Rosa Newman Walinska, a sculptor and poet, was Ukrainian. Nevelson & Walinska studied at the Art Students League and were members of the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA). They even applied for membership on the same day. Their friendship was also reflected in their art, like a portrait "Nevelson" by Walinska (1975) currently on view at the Graham Shay 1857 gallery. Most importantly, both families have living memories and oral histories of these relationships that have continued in a new generation through Rosina and Maria. Fascinating!

I’m profoundly grateful to be included in today's event, which inspired me to share this knowledge with you. I was delighted to see my dear colleagues, meet art professionals, and contribute to what will hopefully become a tradition. I learned that last year's lunch kicked off several collaborative projects and ignited new opportunities for attendees.

What to expect:
Ukrainian Arts Club invites you to an artist talk and exhibition tour with Anastasiya Tarasenko, which coincides with the exhibition of her works at the Monya Rowe Gallery. You will have a chance to see Tarasenko’s art and participate in a curated Q&A talk with the artist.

Employing confrontational and uncomfortable imagery, Tarasenko’s paintings challenge the tyranny of society’s conventions and expectations. The artist uses animals in her work in the manner of fables, illustrating social and moral observations with playfulness and a sense of humor. Tarasenko’s paintings critique the ubiquitous hidden hypocrisies that impact our culture—including greed, colonialism, and consumerism.

Tarasenko’s new body of work is also concerned with restoration and rebuilding. The paintings in this exhibition explore the introspection that accompanies personal relationships, ranging from lovers to friends. Tarasenko confronts the historical objectification of women by depicting a more realistic and relatable representation. Her work critiques feminine gender roles and hierarchical power while examining how one relates to others and how one is perceived.

We were thrilled to have such an engaged audience during the "Lee Krasner: The Edge of Color, Geometric Abstractions 1948–53" exhibition tour at Kasmin Gallery. We highly appreciate the attendees' curiosity and generous feedback. Special thanks go to Michal Patchefsky, Gallery Director, for her hospitality and insights.

It was not easy to cover Lee Krasner's life and artistic journey in 40 minutes. We thank Gail Levin, the author of the fascinating biography describing the artist's life and illuminating Krasner's Ukrainian heritage. This book served as a guide for our tour, and we highly recommend it to everyone interested in learning more about the artist.

Anastasia Gudko, a Ukrainian-American cultural producer and art nonprofit professional, identified a lack of resources that provide information on modern and contemporary artists who immigrated from Ukraine and built their lives overseas.

Starting to self-educate herself on modern and contemporary , Gudko was stunned by the fact that museum labels often incorrectly indicate the artists' origins: most Eastern European artists are assigned "Russia" as their place of birth or simply called 'Russian.' She also noticed that many Jewish-American artists have Ukrainian roots.

Through continued research, Anastasia identified a long list of names that now constitute the backbone of , the first platform to feature and celebrate the Ukrainian origin of renowned American artists and highlight overlooked talent. The platform gathers information on contemporary American artists of Ukrainian origin to showcase the scale, versatility, and creativity of the diaspora.
