Christopher "Kit" Maxwell, one of our superb speakers! Register for the 2026 Symposium. https://americanceramiccircle.org/symposium-2026/

At the 2026 Symposium, Kit Maxwell will discuss the curatorial thinking behind the presentation of ceramics in the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC's) new galleries with Jeffrey Munger. The talk will offer insights into the challenges and opportunities of presenting historic ceramics to contemporary museum audiences. Prior to working at AlC, he was at the Corning Museum of Glass. Maxwell also worked in several different capacities at the Royal Collection Trust, and held the position of assistant curator in the ceramics and glass section at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Kit trained at the University of Cambridge, Birkbeck College, University of London, and the University of Glasgow. His recent postdoctoral work includes research on Nazi-era provenance as well as the material culture of the colonized Caribbean during the 18th century.

Sharon Darling, one of our remarkable speakers! Register today for the 2026 Symposium. https://americanceramiccircle.org/symposium-2026/

At the 2026 Symposium, Sharon Darling will discuss the Atlan Ceramic Art Club, organized in 1893. It was a pioneering group of premier female china painters based in Chicago that held highly anticipated annual exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago for 30 years. The organization was highly influential in the American Arts and Crafts movement by establishing decorative ceramic painting as a respected art form and empowering women to run professional design businesses. Darling was Curator of Decorative & Industrial Arts, Chicago History Museum (1972-1986) & Director of Motorola Inc.'s Corporate Museum (1986-2007). Her 2024 book, Women, Enterprise, Craft: Chicago's Atlan Ceramic Art Club, 1893-1923, received the Decorative Arts Society's Charles F. Montgomery Prize.

RECASTING AMERICAN SILVER IN THE MODERN AGE: THE GORHAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY AND ERIK MAGNUSSEN 1925-1929

October 7, 2026, 6:00 - 7:00 PM
Zoom information available on the NYSS website

"The 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris served as a catalyst in recasting the direction of the Gorham Manufacturing Company and its design staff, which that year included its leading Modern designer, Danish émigré Erik Magnussen. Gorham hired Magnussen, who came to Providence from Copenhagen in 1925, to infuse a strong dose of modernism into their product lines. Magnussen developed his style in the same artistic circle as Georg Jensen, and his early works for Gorham were in the vein of contemporary Danish silver design.

Magnussen's most memorable and radical creation positioned Gorham in the vanguard of modern design among American silver firms. Resplendent with a gleaming surface of sterling, gold, and dark-patinated silver triangular facets, the designer's Cubic Coffee Service was a three-dimensional manifestation of Cubism. The service caused an immediate sensation when it was displayed in the company's Fifth Avenue showroom.
Described by Gorham as being i...based on tall buildings seen from various perspectives and from sun shadows on set-back skyscrapers," the set was hailed "The Lights and Shadows of Manhattan" by the New York Times."

At the 2026 Symposium, Christopher Malone will discuss the early scholarship and groundbreaking new research on Pennsylvania German red earthenware pottery. A graduate of the Winterthur Program, he has held positions at the Moravian Historical Society and the American Swedish Historical Museum. His work shines a light on the Moravians—a historic Protestant community with roots in what is now the Czech Republic. He is the editor for The Daily Antiquarian, a blog focusing on the history, architecture, and material culture of the American Mid-Atlantic.

"Rago, Wright, and LAMA are proud to present The Private Collection of Gertrud & Otto Natzler, an intimate selection of works the artists retained for their own personal collection. This presentation brings together more than 50 ceramics chosen by the Natzlers as particularly meaningful examples of their shared practice, offering a rare perspective on the work they themselves valued most.

United in life and artistry, Gertrud and Otto transformed twentieth-century ceramics through an extraordinary creative partnership: Gertrud as a master of form, throwing distinctly modern vessels of remarkable refinement, and Otto as an alchemist of glaze, whose tireless experimentation produced surfaces of exceptional depth, color, and complexity. With most of these works appearing on the open market for the first time, the collection offers a uniquely personal window into the vision, experimentation, and enduring legacy of two of modern ceramics’ most influential artists."
