JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger joined journalist Errol Louis on NY1’s Inside City Hall to discuss the alarming rise in antisemitism facing New York’s Jewish community. Mark noted that one of the most common manifestations of antisemitism in New York City is holding Jewish people collectively responsible for the actions of the Israeli government. He emphasized that now is the time for our political leaders to lower the temperature—not raise it.

The JCRC-NY and BridgesNY family is heartbroken by the sudden loss of Ousmane Diallo, a member of our 2026-2027 BridgesNY Fellowship cohort.

A Harlem native, Ousmane served as Legislative and Budget Director to NY State Assemblymember Al Taylor. Before that, he was National Youth & College Field Director for the National Action Network, where he helped lead youth mobilization for the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington and was named NAN's Youth Activist of the Year. He was also an Alumni Fellow with Cities United, working to reduce violence and improve outcomes for young people.

Ousmane joined our Bridges cohort earlier this month for an orientation retreat. In two short days, his kindness, humility, intelligence, and faith left an unmistakable mark on everyone he met. At a time of politicial divisiveness he demonstrated a true commitment to bridging divides and connecting with the Jewish community.

In his fellowship application, Ousmane wrote that he strives "to emulate [the late attorney, Michael Hardy's] quiet dedication to service, his ability to remain grounded while advocating for justice, and his commitment to helping people even when no recognition follows." He already lived those words.

Ousmane once said, "Find your purpose or you're wasting air." He found his early, and gave everything to it.

Our hearts are with his family, friends, and all those that knew and cherished him. We will carry his memory forward through this fellowship and beyond. Y'hi Zichro Baruch, may his memory be a blessing.

JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger joined NY1’s Inside City Hall to discuss the recent stabbing incidents on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and the broader concerns facing New York’s Jewish community.

During the conversation, he addressed the importance of confronting antisemitism, ensuring the safety of all New Yorkers, and recognizing the responsibility of public leaders to speak with care during moments of heightened concern.

NYPD crime stats show that more than half of all reported hate crimes in the city since January were anti-Jewish.

JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger speaking at the rally outside the Jewish Center on the Upper West Side, condemning the attack on a Jewish man and an Asian man this week.

"Whether or not this attack is ultimately prosecuted as a hate crime, its impact is already being felt. In a city where antisemitism continues to account for the largest share of reported hate crimes year after year, fear has become a lived experience for far too many Jewish New Yorkers. That is not normal. Words matter, leadership matters, the climate we create matters. No elected official is responsible for every act of hate, but every leader is responsible for helping shape the climate in which we all live."

Hate has no place in this city. It's time to lower the temperature, not raise it.

We are extremely grateful to the elected officials and community leaders who stood by us outside of the Jewish Center in the Upper West Side, condemning the heinous attack on a Jewish man and an Asian man yesterday. JCRC-NY is closely monitoring reports of today's stabbing incidents on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones, and we are praying for their full and speedy recovery. We are grateful to the NYPD and first responders for their swift response, which led to a suspect being taken into custody.

We remain in close contact with our community partners and law enforcement as more information becomes available. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as appropriate.

Statement from JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger:

The Mayor already knew he lacked the legal authority to carry out this irresponsible campaign promise.

However, engaging in brinkmanship with the federal government is not a game.

It risks inviting greater federal intervention on the streets of New York City, places the NYPD in an untenable position, further inflames tensions in the city with the largest Jewish population outside Israel, and distracts from urgent local responsibilities…including responding to a deadly Legionnaires’ outbreak

Jewish New Yorkers, like all New Yorkers, deserve honest leadership from our Mayor. Leadership means solving the crises you have the power to fix, not inventing ones you cannot.
