Our Youth Activist Committee has some updates about their fight for a more affordable, reliable, and accessible Student OMNY program.

After meeting with local leaders and the DOE, students received protective sleeves for this year’s cards. Next school year, the cards are expected to be made with more durable polyester, and a digital Student OMNY option is currently being tested.

While these changes are important, there’s still more to do. Too many students are still excluded from Student OMNY altogether, while those who do qualify are limited to four rides a day and can face sudden deactivations or long waits for replacement cards.

We’ll always keep advocating for what students have been long asking for: Student OMNY for every student, unlimited rides, clear communication around deactivations, and a faster, more reliable replacement process.

Our Youth Activist Committee members are on NY1!

Our youth activists have spent YEARS advocating for a Student OMNY program that is free, fair, and reliable.

On NY1, they spoke about what it’s actually like to rely on Student OMNY — from flimsy cards and inconvenient sleeves to limits that can make getting to school, jobs, internships, and other opportunities harder.

Did you know that Student OMNY doesn’t work on express buses, even when it could dramatically shorten a student’s commute? In our current transit landscape, students often have to pay out of pocket to travel beyond school.

We’re proud to see our youth activists making sure the rest of New York City hears them, too.

We were proud to stand with NY State Senator Kristen Gonzalez and Diana Moreno as they introduced new legislation to stop the sale and deceptive marketing of illegal high-speed electric devices.

The bill comes after a series of deadly crashes involving these devices. In July, a 17-year-old was killed while riding an illegal high-speed device, just months after a crash involving an illegal high-speed device on the Queensboro Bridge killed both its rider and a cyclist.

These devices are increasingly common on New York City streets, even though many cannot legally be operated on city streets or bike lanes.

This new bill will finally end the sale of these deadly devices and fully ban the predatory marketing that lies to New Yorkers that these devices are safe or legal.

Yesterday, Mayor Mamdani released Vision Zero Reimagined, a new roadmap for ending traffic deaths in NYC.

And many of its biggest commitments are policies New Yorkers have spent years fighting for.
➡️ Neighborhood-wide 20 mph speed limits under Sammy’s Law
➡️ Launching Stop Super Speeders
➡️ Hardened daylighting at 1,000 intersections every year
➡️ Redesigning every Vision Zero Priority Corridor
➡️ Creating pedestrian-only and pedestrian-priority districts
➡️ Cracking down on ghost plates

Transportation Alternatives, Families for Safe Streets members, advocates, and New Yorkers across the five boroughs fought to put them on the agenda.

A street-safety plan doesn’t save lives sitting in a PDF. It saves lives when speeds finally come down, dangerous streets are redesigned, intersections are hardened, and promises turn into concrete, markings, signals, and physical protection. We fought to put these ideas on the agenda. Now we’re going to fight to get them done!

In late July, Families for Safe Streets sent Mayor Mamdani a letter calling on his administration to fully implement Sammy’s Law by lowering speed limits across entire neighborhoods, instead of carving the city into a patchwork of short, disconnected stretches.

More than a month later, families who know the devastating cost of traffic violence and speeding are still waiting for a response. After a deadly August in which nine New Yorkers were killed in hit-and-run crashes, these half-measures from the Mamdani Administration are not enough. The administration has the authority to lower speed limits across entire neighborhoods. It’s time it actually used it.

Sign our petition and tell Mayor Mamdani: End the piecemeal approach and fully implement Sammy’s Law.

Fixing Third Avenue will save lives, but it’s not enough.

After nine hit-and-runs in just one month, New Yorkers deserve more. It’s time for a comprehensive safety plan for every corner of our city to ensure everyone can get home safely at the end of the day. We can’t afford to wait.

NYC has the most expensive bike share program in the U.S., with riders entirely footing the bill. Citi Bike receives $0 in public subsidy — the only bike share program in the country that doesn’t receive any public funds. What if a 45-minute ride were just $3, like the subway or the bus?
