We’re thrilled to announce that Tara Fayazi (they/them) will be the next Artistic Director of the Q***r Big Apple Corps Marching Band.
Tara brings more than a decade of experience as a music educator, tuba player, and arts leader, along with a deep understanding of QBAC and what makes this band so special. They joined QBAC in 2015, became a Drum Major in 2018, and has served as Assistant Artistic Director of the Marching Band since 2022.
Tara holds a dual BM in Music Education and Tuba Performance from the Eastman School of Music and an MA in Arts Management and Entrepreneurship from The New School. They have spent more than a decade teaching music in New York City schools and beyond, developing a passion for music education and for creating inclusive, community-centered musical experiences.
As a leader, Tara is committed to building on the band’s legacy while continuing to help it grow. Their vision centers on joyful music-making, thoughtful teaching, accessibility, and belonging—and on creating an environment where musicians can challenge themselves, develop their skills, and feel welcome.
For Tara, taking on the role is deeply personal, too. “This band has taken care of me as I have grown into myself as a musician and leader,” they wrote to the band. “I look forward to bringing all that I have to offer to lead and care for you all with pride.”
Tara will work alongside Marita Begley throughout October before assuming full artistic leadership in November.
And as we welcome Tara into this new role, we celebrate Marita’s extraordinary 25 years of leadership. Her musicianship, dedication, and vision have shaped generations of musicians, color guard, dancers, and volunteers, and helped make QBAC the powerful, joyful expression of LGBTQIA+ pride that it is today. We’re enormously grateful for everything she has given the band. Stay tuned for opportunities to celebrate Marita in person.
Please join us in welcoming Tara as QBAC’s next Marching Band Artistic Director! We’re excited for what Tara will bring to the band, and for everything that comes next.
