Advocates of Silenced Turkey

Advocates of Silenced Turkey This is the official page for the Advocates of Silenced Turkey. We campaign for human rights in Turkey. Dissent in New Turkey is absent.

When the Turkish President declared in an infamous speech that “old Turkey no longer exists. This Turkey is new Turkey”, the story of Turkish authoritarianism had once and for all taken on a new character. Since the July of 2016, the Turkish government has improperly imprisoned 130,214 homemakers, teachers, NGO workers, academics, judges, prosecutors, and journalists. Once upon a time, the Republi

c of Turkey was lauded by insiders and outsiders for constituting a powerful model for democratization. In New Turkey, however, silence against the regime’s draconian laws, mass imprisonment, and frequent violations of universal human rights has become the sole norm. In a regime which ranks as the worst upholder of the rule-of-law in Eastern Europe & Central Asia, 187 media outlets have been shut down and 308 journalists, including Idil Eser, Ahmet Altan, Hidayet Karaca, Aslı Erdoğan, Şahin Alpay, Selahattin Demirtaş, and Andrew Brunson are political prisoners of the state. Human rights in New Turkey are absent. Respect for human dignity in New Turkey is absent. We are a group of lawyers, judges, academics, journalists, and hundreds of activists who cherish democratic ideals and universal human rights. We are prisoners of conscience wanted by Erdogan’s regime, relatives of political prisoners, and victims who have lost their jobs, property, and family members to the current administration which has been described as a Mafia State. We are the Advocates of Silenced Turkey. We, the Advocates, have made it our mission to champion the rights of Silenced Turkey until universal human rights and democratic governance are established and sustained as the utmost priorities of the Republic of Turkey. AST is a 501(c)(3) Not for Profit charitable and educational organization based in NJ exclusively for defending human and civil rights. To address all human rights violations in Turkey regarding civil, political, economic, social, and cultural as contained in the basic human rights documents. To prevent genocide, crime against humanity, arbitrary detention, torture and ill-treatment, discrimination and to defend the right to life, rule of law, right to privacy, freedom of expression, freedom of thought, conscience and religion, freedom of associations. To utilize all human rights advocacy tools, mechanisms, and systems that can possibly be used to protect and promote the human rights of those whose voices are being silenced in Turkey and beyond. To hold accountable the perpetrators of Human Rights in Turkey and beyond together with the opportunity for victims to obtain justice and reparation, in order to do so, it uses the power of the law to fight the impunity of perpetrators, accomplices, and instigators of crimes defend the interests of victims before national and international courts and bring cases before the appropriate international human rights bodies, in close collaboration with its local partners and the victims to get authorities to take firm action against violations.

As July 15, 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the failed coup attempt in , Advocates of Silenced Turkey (AST) will host a special livestream event reflecting on the real story of the past decade and examining the lasting impact of Turkey’s post-coup emergency decrees (KHKs) and the widespread social, economic, and human consequences they have produced.

This event will focus on the concept of “social death” and explore how emergency decree measures have affected people from all walks of life, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or faith. Drawing on reports, testimonies, infographics, and expert analysis, we will discuss documented human rights abuses, arbitrary detention, prison conditions, torture cases, enforced disappearances, hate speech, and the experiences of some of the groups most affected by the post-coup crackdown, including women, children, Hizmet movement volunteers, Kurds, and other marginalized communities.

This live discussion, on July 8, will feature live guests and video messages from researchers, advocates, and survivors reflecting on a decade of consequences and exploring pathways toward justice, accountability, and healing.

Please note that the event will be conducted in Turkish.

What happens when actions that were once completely legal are later used as evidence against you?

This discussion highlights concerns about due process, legal certainty, and the retrospective use of ordinary activities as grounds for serious accusations.

Bank accounts, travel records, phone calls, educational choices, memberships, and other everyday activities can become the subject of scrutiny years later, raising important questions about fairness, justice, and the rule of law.

A functioning justice system depends on clear laws, due process, and the protection of fundamental rights.

Human rights advocacy depends on consistency.

When governments criticize human rights violations abroad, questions often arise about whether the same standards are applied at home. This discussion explores concerns about accountability, freedom of expression, political opposition, and the importance of applying human rights principles universally.

Regardless of political views, the protection of fundamental rights, due process, and freedom of the press remains essential to any democratic society.

Human rights should not depend on geography, politics, or ideology.

Many elderly prisoners rely on fellow inmates for basic needs such as eating, walking, dressing, and taking medication. International human rights standards recognize that detention conditions must respect human dignity. For some elderly prisoners, continued incarceration may be incompatible with that principle.

is aging rapidly.
In 2018, people aged 65+ made up 8.8% of the population.
By 2024, that figure reached 10.2%, representing more than 8.7 million people.
The Turkish Constitution explicitly states that older persons shall be protected by the State.
Yet, on this World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we see that age discrimination continues in access to services, legal transactions, healthcare, and public life.
