ARTSail

ARTSail ARTSail is a residency and research program that provides artists and cultural producers with the opportunity to research and explore the Miami waterways

Water has played a pivotal role in shaping the identity of Miami and its communities and is increasingly becoming a central theme in ecological discussions. ARTSail is an ArtCenter South Florida project in partnership with the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, under the direction of independent curator Ombretta Agró Andruff. It is a nomadic residency and research program that seeks to

provide artists and cultural producers with the opportunity to research and explore the extensive coastlines and waterways that surround Miami. ARTSail, was originated in 2015 thanks to the award of a Knight Arts Challenge Grant to the ArtCenter South Florida. Fountainhead has joined recently as a residency partner. ARTSail hosts its residencies part time on land at ArtCenter/Downtown and Fountainhead Residency; and part time on partner vessels where residents are invited for a period of four to six weeks to further existing research or generate new work in response to Miami’s relationship to the water. Two artists and one curator have been selected for the 2016/2017 residencies from 190+ submissions received from 37 countries: artist/researcher Mark Lee Koven, curator Blanca de la Torre, and artist Simon Faithfull. Cultural practitioners, such as these, offer creative solutions to develop awareness in the community about environmental concerns and engage the public in the discovery, preservation and protection of South Florida’s waterways.

Must see!!
We visited Liquid Chimeras at .digitalculturecenter in Milan.

Curated by and created by Entangled Others (Sofia Crespo & Feileacan McCormick ), the exhibition explores the ocean through what remains unseen.

Liquid Chimeras stems from this condition: where information is lacking, spaces for creative possibility open up. Just as in the Middle Ages the absence of scientific knowledge was filled by monstrous and imaginary creatures, symbolic projections of unknown territories, so today the attempt to make visible what exists but escapes direct perception opens up a space for what art has always been able to do: imagine speculative forms that do not explain reality but question it.

When we’re inside it, it might be important to step outside, take some distance, and take a moment to celebrate the positive things and appreciate where we’re all living together. We’re surrounded by so much bad news, but today let’s focus on the positive.
Happy Earth Day!!!

We visited The Day May Break by at – Turin, bringing together all four chapters of the series (we are highlighting the first one).

From drought- and flood-affected communities in Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Bolivia (Chapters I & II), to submerged figures in Fiji reflecting rising sea levels (Chapter III), and displaced Syrian families in Jordan (Chapter IV), the exhibition traces the human and ecological impact of climate change.

Chapter One (2021), set in Kenya and Zimbabwe, and Chapter Two (2022), set in Bolivia, present powerful and moving portraits of people and animals, both severely affected by extreme drought or floods that have destroyed homes and livelihoods, within the same frame. The photographs were taken in sanctuaries and reserves, where the animals have survived various forms of devastation, from habitat loss to illegal wildlife trafficking.

Through powerful and poetic images, the work reveals both fragility and resilience across these interconnected landscapes.
