A conference lasts one day. The work it starts takes all year.

Earlier this month, the State of NYC Women Conference brought New Yorkers together to talk about what women in this city need: economic security, safe and affordable care, protection from online harm, and a real seat at the decision-making table.

Now comes the part that happens after everyone goes home. Your gift turns those conversations into the research, advocacy, and leadership programs that reach women across all five boroughs.

Following the 2026 State of NYC Women's Conference, WCC's President & CEO Sharon Sewell-Fairman spoke with NY1's Rocco Vertuccio about some of the issues affecting women in our city.

New York has invested in 3-K and pre-K, but most programs end around 2:30, and the workday doesn’t. For mothers, that gap can mean cutting hours, paying for care they can’t afford, or leaving work altogether. Childcare offers economic security to families, and without it, women in our city can’t fully participate in the workforce.

Disabled women earn just 56 cents for every dollar paid to nondisabled men. Today, on Disabled Women’s Equal Pay Day, let’s break down why.

Even disabled women working full-time, year-round, only earn 68 cents on the dollar. This gap traces back to a long history of ableism, institutionalization, and workplace discrimination, and it widens even further for disabled women of color.

Disabled women face barriers most workers never have to navigate: limited access to healthcare, childcare, and accommodations, and overrepresentation in minimum and sub-minimum wage jobs.

True equal pay has to include every disabled worker. That takes policy change, not just awareness.

One question guided the second State of NYC Women Conference: what will it take for women in New York City to move from surviving to thriving? Over 360 leaders, advocates, policymakers, funders, students, and community members joined us at Civic Hall and online to answer it, with 100 more attendees than last year.

It's not over until you show up.

Women in NYC outvote men in every election cycle (The Power of Participation, WCC, 2025). But that power only counts if women vote at the ballot. Women show up for our families, neighborhoods, and this November should be no different.

You still have a week left to register! Check your status today, then send this to someone who needs the reminder.

Voter Registration Deadline is October 24th, early voting runs October 24th through November 1st, and General Election Day is November 3rd.

A pay equity law passed. A first-ever conference held. Voting PSAs seen by 7 million people. That was 2025's list.

2026's list is already forming: deeper work on economic justice and health access, an expanded Civic Leadership Program, and continued pressure on childcare affordability and wage equity.

Women of color are more likely to register to vote at polling places, schools, and hospitals than anywhere else. That single data point shows where access already works, and where WCC is pushing to expand it.

It's one finding in The Power of Participation, our new research on civic power. The bigger picture: women volunteer more than men in NYC, 20% compared to 17%, and community involvement runs higher among Black women at 18%. But only 5% of women have ever held a leadership role in a local organization, a gap that widens sharply with income.

Indigenous communities have been leading, organizing, and defending this land since long before any system existed to exclude them from it. Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor that history and the Indigenous women who continue to carry it forward.

Indigenous women remain among the most civically active and community-rooted leaders in this country, all while facing some of the steepest barriers to economic security, healthcare access, and political representation.

In NYC, Indigenous Peoples’ Day is celebrated October 11–12 on Randall’s Island with 24 hours of cultural performances, music, spoken word, guest speakers, and more. The event is free and open to all.
