During devastating floods in 2014, young Belal from Noakhali district witnessed a baby deer stranded on the far side of a swollen, raging river, separated from its family by surging waters.

Without hesitation, this teenage boy plunged into the fast-flowing current, determined to rescue the helpless fawn.

The force of the river was so strong that at moments, only his outstretched arm-clutching the tiny deer by its legs, could be seen above the surface.

Every second was fraught with peril as Belal fought against the torrent, gripping witnesses and wildlife photographer Hasibul Wahab, who captured every harrowing moment.

Against all odds, Belal successfully reached the opposite bank, delivering the fawn to safety and reuniting it with its family.

The photographer later recalled the collective fear for Belal's life, but also how the boy's courage "was truly beyond words."

The images spread worldwide, becoming a beacon of hope and showing the extraordinary bonds possible between humans and animals who share our world.

Sometimes the greatest heroes are those who risk everything for creatures who cannot ask for help.
