FLIP National

FLIP National ”FLIP” is an acronym; it stands for First-Generation Low-Income Partnership. This advocacy work was done through a student group called Columbia FLIP.

FLIP National is a national non-profit organization that does advocacy work on behalf of first-generation and/or low income college students at colleges & universities across the country. FLIP National acts on its mission by building a community for first-generation and/or low-income students, alumni/ae, faculty, and administrators within and across institutions of higher learning; by crafting, im

plementing and/or expanding initiatives to address various target areas that affect the success and well-being of first-generation and/or low-income students in institutions of higher learning; and by advocating for policy changes on a macro level to support first-generation and/or low-income students across the country (i.e., legislation, best practices, changes to university policy, etc.) FLIP National was founded in 2015 by a group of students at Columbia University who were involved in student advocacy for first-generation and/or low-income (FGLI) students on Columbia's campus. The work of Columbia FLIP received international media attention at one point, which sparked a movement of FGLI students across the country to build on the momentum that Columbia FLIP was able to generate. FLIP National was formed to capitalize on this momentum and expand the advocacy work of Columbia FLIP to colleges & universities across the country. FLIP National is structured in a manner similar to that of fraternities & sororities; that is, there is a national organization at the top with chapters at different schools. FLIP National believes in centering student advocacy and the student voice, which is why our chapters are student groups at different campuses that we support in their efforts to affect changes on their respective campuses. We currently have 20 chapters at Columbia University, Emory University, the University of Pennsylvania, Lehigh University, NYU, Pitzer College, Johns Hopkins University, Cornell University, Brown University, Case Western Reserve University, Bard College, Virginia Commonwealth University, The College of Wooster, Appalachian State University, the University of Michigan, the University of Virginia, George Mason University, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Tarleton State University, Boston University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Florida, the University of North Texas, Furman University, James Madison University, and Vanderbilt University. In addition, we have garnered interest from approximately 40 additional schools who want to start FLIP National chapters at their schools. For more information on FLIP National, visit us on our website and be sure to sign up for our E-mail list. You can also get involved by donating to us using the Donate button on this page.

Usually nonprofits aren't in the habit of asking its supporters to donate to other nonprofits, but one of our partners needs our help.

Our friends at Class Action are in jeopardy of having to cease operations this fall unless they raise $50K by the end of this month. Class Action does a lot of good work on FGLI student issues as part of their larger mission to eradicate classism & extreme poverty.

Please consider donating to Class Action before June 30th to help them continue their great work!

In April, we brought back GEN Week for the first time in three years. We said during GEN Week that we'd be sharing photos of the different GEN Week celebrations that happened through the week, but we had some delays in getting the photos from GEN Week participants. Once we got the photos together, we decided that we also wanted to give graduation season the space it deserves. (Congratulations to all the FGLI students that graduated this spring!)

Now that graduation season has passed, we wanted to be sure that we shared the GEN Week celebrations of our participating chapters. So throughout this week and next week, we will share the highlights of all the GEN Week celebrations that happened during GEN Week in April. We are going to start with First-Generation Student Association; check out how they celebrated GEN Week!

It's GEN Week, so there's no better time for us to highlight FGLI student experiences than this week.

In our next episode of The FLIP Side, “New Season, Same Demands”, we spotlight one of our beloved FLIP National chapters, First-Generation Student Association. We also highlight that while it may be a new season, FGLI students' demands of institutions haven't changed.

Be sure to stream the episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Google Podcasts & iHeart Radio on Friday (4/22) at 12:00 PM ET!
