FLIP National is a national non-profit organization that does advocacy work on behalf of first-generation and/or low income college students at colleges & universities across the country. FLIP National acts on its mission by building a community for first-generation and/or low-income students, alumni/ae, faculty, and administrators within and across institutions of higher learning; by crafting, im
plementing and/or expanding initiatives to address various target areas that affect the success and well-being of first-generation and/or low-income students in institutions of higher learning; and by advocating for policy changes on a macro level to support first-generation and/or low-income students across the country (i.e., legislation, best practices, changes to university policy, etc.) FLIP National was founded in 2015 by a group of students at Columbia University who were involved in student advocacy for first-generation and/or low-income (FGLI) students on Columbia's campus. The work of Columbia FLIP received international media attention at one point, which sparked a movement of FGLI students across the country to build on the momentum that Columbia FLIP was able to generate. FLIP National was formed to capitalize on this momentum and expand the advocacy work of Columbia FLIP to colleges & universities across the country. FLIP National is structured in a manner similar to that of fraternities & sororities; that is, there is a national organization at the top with chapters at different schools. FLIP National believes in centering student advocacy and the student voice, which is why our chapters are student groups at different campuses that we support in their efforts to affect changes on their respective campuses. We currently have 20 chapters at Columbia University, Emory University, the University of Pennsylvania, Lehigh University, NYU, Pitzer College, Johns Hopkins University, Cornell University, Brown University, Case Western Reserve University, Bard College, Virginia Commonwealth University, The College of Wooster, Appalachian State University, the University of Michigan, the University of Virginia, George Mason University, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Tarleton State University, Boston University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Florida, the University of North Texas, Furman University, James Madison University, and Vanderbilt University. In addition, we have garnered interest from approximately 40 additional schools who want to start FLIP National chapters at their schools.
