Today, we celebrate St. Joseph’s Day (La Festa di San Giuseppe), honoring a tradition that began in Sicily as an act of faith, gratitude, and giving back during a time of famine.

In Italy, today is also Father’s Day (La Festa del Papà), recognizing St. Joseph as the model of fatherhood and the importance of family.

What started as a promise to feed those in need remains a powerful reminder of who we are and what we stand for. Community, generosity, and taking care of others.

Wishing everyone a Happy St. Joseph’s Day and a Happy Father’s Day. 🇮🇹💪

Proud to celebrate St. Joseph’s Day tonight alongside Queensboro UNICO, Società di Polizzi Generosa, and the Italian Heritage and Hope Foundation.

Community and business leaders from different backgrounds came together in the spirit of tradition, faith, and unity. Nights like this remind us what’s possible when people show up for each other.

Grateful for the friendships, the shared purpose, and the opportunity to keep doing good work together. Looking forward to many more like this.

Queensboro UNICO is proud to make our annual Thanksgiving donation to the Sacred Heart Food Pantry in Glendale.

This tradition lets us support families in our community during a time when a good meal and a little kindness mean so much.

Grateful to everyone who helps make this possible each year.

Columbus Day and Italian American Heritage Month aren’t about celebrating one man — they’re about honoring a people.

This day was created in 1892, alongside the Pledge of Allegiance, to recognize Italian immigrants who faced discrimination yet helped build the nation we share. It’s not about rewriting anyone else’s story — it’s about telling ours.

Every culture deserves space to celebrate its roots. October is ours — a time to honor the faith, family, and hard work that generations of Italian Americans brought to America’s story. Pride in one heritage never silences another — it adds to the chorus that makes this country strong.

Time to learn
💯🇮🇹🇺🇸👍👌
The slur "w*p" has nothing to do with legal status - in fact, the vast majority of Italians entered the U.S. legally through Ellis Island and other ports.

The term actually comes from the Neapolitan dialect word "guappo," meaning a swaggering or flashy man. In the late 1800s-early 1900s, English speakers distorted this into "w*p" and used it as a slur against Southern Italian immigrants - not because they were undocumented, but because they were culturally and ethnically different.
The fake "Without Papers" acronym didn't appear until decades later, sometime mid-20th century. By then, people were looking for easy explanations and invented a backronym. Linguists, immigration records, and early newspapers all prove:
"W*P" was never an Ellis Island label.
No Italian was stamped "without papers"
It was always an ethnic slur - not a legal term.
Between 1880 and 1924, over 4 million Italians arrived legally in the U.S., were inspected, registered, and helped build this country from the ground up.
