Goodbye Spring, Hello Summer!

KAFSC’s Economic Empowerment Program wrapped up an incredible Spring Semester and jumped right into our Summer Semester last week! We’re excited to offer new classes, completely free of charge, to help participants continue building skills during the summer season. With our new English Speaking Workshop and Social Media Content Creation class, we’re creating opportunities for learning, growth, and economic empowerment.

We’re also thrilled to announce the return of our Summer Writing Program due to popular demand. We look forward to welcoming back familiar faces alongside new fellows.

At KAFSC, we believe education is power. Seeing our classrooms filled with energy, determination, and community reminds us why this work matters. By supporting survivors of gender-based violence and community members, we help foster confidence, independence, and long-term economic stability.

KAFSC’s PATH volunteers were proud to support AAPI Family Fun Day by patrolling the event and helping create a safe, welcoming environment for families and community members.

Throughout the day, volunteers shared information about anti-Asian hate, community safety, and available resources to help raise awareness and empower community members with tools to stay informed and protected.

Community safety is a shared responsibility, and events like these highlight the importance of showing up for one another, building trust, and fostering a sense of belonging.

Throughout the month of May, KAFSC’s PATH volunteers walked the streets of Flushing to promote safety, connection, and community care.

During their patrols, volunteers distributed informational materials and practical resources for seniors, including pill organizers, hand sanitizer, tissue packs, and Hope Against Hate campaign bags. These outreach efforts help raise awareness about anti-Asian hate, connect community members to resources, and ensure our neighbors know they are seen, supported, and protected.

The Hope Against Hate Campaign, led by in partnership with , works to address hate violence and discrimination through community outreach, education, and support.

YCPT students are currently participating in an ongoing workshop series led by focused on privilege, identity, and the ways our lived experiences shape how we move through the world.

Through presentations, small-group discussions, and interactive activities, students are exploring different forms of privilege and reflecting on how social identities influence opportunities, perspectives, and personal experiences.

At KAFSC, we believe that meaningful leadership begins with self-awareness, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the communities around us. We are proud of our YCPT students for engaging thoughtfully in these important conversations and continuing to grow as advocates and leaders.

KAFSC is proud to welcome three new hotline volunteers who have successfully completed our intensive four-week training program and are preparing to serve on our 24-Hour Hotline!

Through training in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, survivor-centered communication, and confidentiality, these volunteers have gained the skills needed to support individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments.

For many survivors, a hotline call is the first step toward safety, healing, and hope. We are deeply grateful to our newest volunteers for their dedication, compassion, and commitment to standing alongside our community.

Families from across our community joined us for a day filled with fun activities, resources, performances, and opportunities to connect. We were honored to recognize with KAFSC’s Leadership in Action Award for her dedication to advancing equity and supporting diverse communities. We also proudly presented with the Distinguished Public Service & AAPI Advocacy Award for her longstanding commitment to protecting and uplifting AAPI and immigrant communities.

KAFSC was honored to attend ’ AAPI Heritage Month Celebration at the Helen Marshall Cultural Center in Queens Borough Hall!

This gathering was a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity, resilience, and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities across Queens. We were proud to support the event through the service of our dedicated volunteers and grateful to be in community with fellow advocates, leaders, and organizations committed to uplifting our borough.

KAFSC was also deeply honored to receive a Citation from Borough President Richards in recognition of our work serving immigrant survivors of gender-based violence and the diverse communities of Queens. This recognition reflects the strength of our clients, volunteers, staff, and community partners who make our mission possible every day.

We congratulate all of the organizations and community leaders recognized at this celebration for their contributions to building stronger, safer, and more inclusive communities. KAFSC’s Executive Director was honored to participate in the roundtable discussion, “When Equity Is on the Line: Values-Forward Nonprofit Leadership at a Time of Threat,” at the Social Equity Leadership Conference (SELC) 2026 at Rutgers University.

Joined by Kimberly Hardy Watson, CEO of Graham Windham (TAG), Carla Chávez, Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer at ACLU-NJ (TAG), and moderated by Stella Biillings, Chief of Strategy and Board Engagement at Safe Horizon (Tag), the conversation explored what it means to lead with courage, clarity, and equity during a time of uncertainty and challenge. The discussion was powerful, timely, and deeply rooted in the realities facing nonprofit leaders and the communities we serve.

This annual event brings together families, youth, community leaders, advocates, and partner organizations to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month and uplift the diversity, resilience, and contributions of AAPI communities through cultural performances, family activities, and community resources.

This year, KAFSC is honored to recognize Assemblymember Amanda Septimo with the Leadership in Action Award for her unwavering commitment to advancing equity and supporting immigrant, working-class, and underserved communities across New York. Her advocacy for marginalized communities has helped expand access to critical resources, representation, and opportunity for those most impacted by systemic inequalities.

One of the four Roosevelt Ave beauty salons successfully completed its 4-part workshop series on Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking!

Congratulations to Studio L.A. Salon .la820 and its stylists for joining this important campaign to help combat domestic violence and human trafficking in our community, especially along Roosevelt Ave.

Over the course of the four workshops, participants engaged in discussions on Domestic Violence 101, Human Trafficking awareness, Know Your Rights, and a community Q&A focused on sharing ideas and solutions to help create positive change along Roosevelt Ave.

Thank you to Assemblymember Catalina Cruz, Assemblymember Steven Raga and Council Member Shekar Krishnan for supporting this initiative and helping promote safety, dignity, and well-being in our community. 💜
