Kara Young, a Tony Award-winning Broadway actress and alumna of The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Manhattan was recently featured in New York Magazine's The Cut!✨

Kara opened up about her personal style, creativity, and how to advocate for yourself in the industry.

"There's a hustle that is a part of wanting to get yourself out there at a time when you don't have representation. You have to be all those people to make sure that you're advocating for yourself, that you're pitching yourself properly, emailing casting directors, inviting them to the show that you rehearse for three weeks and only runs two nights. You become that by default in this industry, especially when you don't have reps." -Kara

We know this time of year can feel overwhelming. That’s why all month long, Student Leadership Network is bringing you straight from admissions counselors at various colleges and universities across the country!

Coraly is a first-year admissions counselor at Daemen University in Buffalo, NY. Her top tip? Don't leave out your extracurriculars in your applications, even the ones that don't look like a typical "activity." Caring for a sibling, participating in religious activities, working a part-time job - these all show who you are and what you bring to a campus community!

In 2021, Student Leadership Network’s CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) program officially launched CollegeJourney (formerly known as Bridge Through College) - a program designed to help students persist through college, and ultimately graduate. 🎓

Today, CollegeJourney, run by Student Leadership Network’s College Persistence team, is a thriving peer-to-peer program that supports CBI alumni at City University of New York (CUNY) schools across NYC.

Alumni Spotlight: Journey W. ✨

Meet Journey - an alumna of The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Manhattan, now an English major at Howard University! 🎓

Last year, Journey returned to TYWLS Manhattan for Alumni Day, sharing advice for current students navigating the high school-to-college transition.

As a high school student navigating the process, Journey worked closely with her Directors of College Counseling (DCCS). Ultimately, attending helped her realize she wanted a campus environment for college.

Volunteers share their unique career journeys, helping students explore possible career pathways while building their own networking and communication skills.

🌟 Meet Lizbeth F.!

As a high school student at The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Manhattan, Lizbeth was already making an impact. She co-chaired the Latinx Student Union, researched microplastics in the Hudson River, and led efforts to bring hygiene products to incarcerated individuals. Now, she’s making an impact as a college student at Wesleyan University 🎓

Through Student Leadership Network, Lizbeth connected with The Estée Lauder Companies and landed a summer internship on the Global Product Marketing team for La Mer, where she had the opportunity to present her own peer competitor analysis. This internship experience was impactful, and Lizbeth became interested in majoring in or .

With guidance from her Director of College Counseling (DCC), Angelique Figueroa, Lizbeth matched with Wesleyan through QuestBridge - a full-ride scholarship to her top-choice school!

Student Leadership Network has lost a dear friend.

A feminist icon, journalist, and co-founder of Ms. Magazine, Gloria Steinem was with us from the beginning. Thirty years ago, Gloria visited The Young Women's Leadership School in East Harlem, invited by our founder, Ann Tisch. She thought she'd learn nothing new. Instead, watching girls learn together in a circle instead of facing a teacher's back, she was moved to tears: "I would have loved to have this!"

We're grateful for her and for everything she's shown our students about what's possible when someone truly sees you.

Meet Lissa, a graduate of The Young Women's Leadership School (TYWLS) of Manhattan, now a student at Smith College in Massachusetts!

Early in Lissa’s college search, she was set on staying in New York City. But after talking with her Director of College Counseling at the time, Angelique Figueroa, she began opening her list to schools in upstate New York and out of state.

The real turning point for Lissa came when she was nominated for The Posse Foundation program, which offers full-tuition scholarships.

"When I was going through the Posse assessment process, I realized it wasn't just essays. It was very different, with in-person workshops, group activities, and interviews, which actually made me more open to the idea of going away to college with some of these students. Also, going on college trips with Student Leadership Network, including an overnight trip, gradually helped me become more comfortable with exploring an out-of-state option. When I got the Posse Foundation Scholarship to attend Smith, I was really excited." -Lissa

Today, Lissa is thriving as a student at Smith College - she enjoys the open curriculum and has had the opportunity to take a wide variety of classes, including costume design, weightlifting, strength and flexibility, and more!
