Disability Pride NYC Parade and Festival Cancelled

We’ve had a great time together sharing and creating together as a community at the many virtual Parade and Festival planning and outreach meetings. So it is with a heavy heart that the organizers of the 2022 Disability Pride NYC Parade and Festival have made the decision to cancel the Sunday, October 2nd Disability Pride Parade in consultation with NYC safety experts for similar large-scale events.

The parade, which was set to return Sunday, October 2nd after a two-year break due to COVID-19, is canceled due to the weather forecast. While the forecast predicts heavy rains on Saturday and may rain Sunday, our larger concern is for extremely high winds – at least 30 MPH wind gusts in the area on Sunday.

Additionally, we are fortunate to have guidance alerting us that the weather on Saturday and Sunday may impact transportation including possible disruption due to flooding for bus and subway service and an inability for Access-A-Ride to have their usual in-person presence at the parade.

Many in our communities may not be able to attend. If there is any theme to this year’s parade, it is “Nothing about Us, Without Us” and the parade should be inclusive and accessible to all.

There are take-aways that we have learned during the pandemic that the future of everything now includes virtual. We’ll be reaching out to you shortly with a virtual plan for Sunday, October 2nd.

So this year let’s celebrate together and share resources — including information from the 50 disability organizations, City Agencies, youth groups and the Department of Education who registered for tables at the festival – just online.
