Repost “How to talk with kids about police abolition? We offer these slides as a starting point - a small part of a lifelong conversation. We hope you will use what you find helpful and right for your kids.

We know that the police bring violence and harm to our communities. We are terrified and exhausted to experience this harm over and over witnessing the murder of so many Black and Brown people at the hands of the police. While we rally together for real change, the youngest among us deserve to be included in these conversations

We know that real change can be accomplished by abolishing the police and redistributing resources to protect and care for our communities. We also know that abolition goes much deeper than getting rid of the police. We need to work together as a community to help everyone live with dignity, to expand our own empathy, and to reinvigorate community care.

You might already be practicing abolition with your friends, family, and in your community! Maybe you help make meals for your neighborhood Free Fridge? Maybe you change the rules of a game so that all of your classmates can play together? There are so many ways to do it and we would love to hear about them! Send us a message or comment with some of the ways that you keep your community safe and cared for without involving the police!

Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving to help transform communities.

To participate, consider donating any amount to Arts & Dreams, which I co-founded to help people experience art as a way to believe in their dreams www.ArtsAndDreams.org/donate.

We have seen in 2020 how important it is to believe things can improve.

We are seeing it's important to dream. We can dream a more equitable and just society, with more community care.

It is my privilege to bring expression and tenderness to the people in our community in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC, through Arts & Dreams, with your help.

In this especially challenging year, it's hard to ask for support when many of us are stretched to our limit.

If you’re able, I invite you to donate to fund more workshops: ArtsAndDreams.org/donate.

The Arts & Dreams illustrated book is available on Amazon and Barnes & Nobles. It makes a great gift for children ages 7-12. “Rose’s Summer of Arts & Dreams”:
https://www.amazon.com/ROSES-SUMMER-DREAMS-Laura-Baran/dp/1504347706

Your donation to Arts & Dreams on helps people love themselves, express their creativity, and imagine brighter futures.

Thank you for your support.

Sending well wishes and blessings to you,
Laura Baran

Deep condolences to the family of Ms. Deanna Cherry and everyone at Red Hook Initiative. Ms. Cherry was always warm and kind when Arts & Dreams visited and she loved painting and making art with the youth. Much Love ❤️💐

From Normal human responses to a global pandemic that do not need to be pathologized or treated as abnormal:

Food and eating challenges & difficulties

Resurgence of compulsive or addictive behaviours

Obsessive or instrusive thoughts, memories or fears

Generalised fear, anxiety, panic & overwhelm

Depression, dissociation, shutdown, freeze, hopelessness

Feelings of abandonment or loneliness or isolation

Sense of loss of control or powerlessness. Feeling confused

Anxiety around money, shelter, food, and other survival needs

Past traumas being triggered, activated or re-experienced

Health anxiety heightened (about Covid19 and otherwise)

Feeling unheard or unseen amidst the flood of stories

Feeling like existing chronic needs are being ignored

Thoughts and feelings about death and dying

New and old grief surfacing

Feelings of anger, irritation and frustration

Caring for everyone to own detriment. Compassion fatigue

Feeling exhausted, fatigued, unmotivated, lethargic

Hyper-focus, surges of energy, keeping 'doing' to distract

Immune system depleted, other illnesses starting, chronic flares (List not exhaustive)

AND if you do need support with any of it, that's okay too.
