ZoeyStory

ZoeyStory I started this page to help educate the public about “Puppy Mills” (aka: Large Scale Breeding Facilities). Unfortunately I had to learn about them the hard way.

Zoeystory.com was inspired by the heartwarming story of little Zoey, a Coton de Tulear, who made her way from a notorious puppy mill in Missouri to the Big Apple. I started this because my puppy, Zoey, cannot speak for herself. She cannot tell the horrors of her life in Missouri at a Puppy Mill, the transportation to NYC and her health problems. So I intend to tell that story for her in hopes we can educate the public and strive to end the practices of pet stores that profit from puppy mills.

It was a tough day for our amazing friends at the Sebastian County Humane Society

Today was an excruciating one for our shelter staff. Today we had to say goodbye to our sweet Cecily. After being on the IV fluids overnight she was able to stand again, we tested her for heartworms and parvo, both came back negative. Then this morning we couldn't help but notice her stool was very foul smelling and had massive amounts of blood in it. We sent her to a vet clinic for X-rays and bloodwork. The news we found out was absolutely heart wrenching. Her intestines had turned inside out from starvation and stomach was bloated full of blood and a mass. We are unsure of exactly what happened, but we believe she may have eaten rocks due to starvation. The vet told us that due to the extensive damage and deteriorated condition of Cecily that she would not be strong enough for the immediate surgeries and would not wake up from anesthesia, that putting her through those surgeries would kill her. When she was brought back to the shelter, her condition was continuing to get worse. After long discussions, we decided our best option was to put Cecily to sleep instead of letting her suffer to her death. In the short time we had Cecily in our care we all became very attached to her. When the time came she was surrounded by people that love her and she was on her favorite blanket. Today was hard, excruciating, and exhausting. We love you Cecily and wish we could've gotten you in sooner. We mourn the beautiful souls that we cannot save, and rescue the ones we can. Even though today was miserable we will march on to save the ones we can. After Cecily passed, we ran heartworm tests on several new dogs, 6 of which tested positive for heartworms. With the help of our community, and only through the help of the communtiy, we will be able to treat them, Iris, and the countless other animals that are in need. RIP Cecily and thank you for everyone that fell in love with her, whether through facebook or through working with her. She did not pass away unloved or alone. Please remember to love your pets, educate yourselves on pet welfare, and spay/neuter. If we all do that, we may see a lot less of the pain and suffering these innocent animals go through.

May is Pet Cancer Awareness Month

May is Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Because cancer is so common in pets, we want you to be prepared. We hope you never have to ask these questions, but these are 5 important questions to ask your veterinarian when your pet gets a diagnosis of cancer.

1) What type of cancer does my pet have?
2) What other diagnostic tests or staging tests should be performed?
3) What treatment options are available for this type of cancer? 4) Should I seek the help of a specialist (i.e. oncologist, surgeon, radiologist, etc.)?
5) Is my pet currently in pain? If so what can we do about it?
There are many different types of cancer (sarcomas, carcinomas, round cells tumors, etc.). Knowing the exact type of cancer will allow you to ask the right questions and do the right research.

Often times the diagnosis of cancer is just the beginning. Further tests (ultrasounds, radiographs, blood tests, etc.) are often recommended to help better classify the disease and/or determine if the disease has spread to other locations.

Treatment for cancer often involves multiple modalities. Treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy. Knowing all of the potential treatment options will help you make the most informed decision.

General practitioners are the central members of your pet’s medical team. Cancer, however, is a very complex disease with various and often rapidly changing treatment options. Seeking the help of a board certified veterinary specialist might be needed to decide upon the best treatment plan for your pet.

Animals are very good at hiding their signs. Although your pet might not be acting painful (crying, whining, etc.) it is still possible for them to be in pain. Your veterinarian can assess heart rate, respiratory rate and other physiologic responses that may indicate pain. If your pet is showing signs of pain, there are many options for pain relieving medications.
