It was a tough day for our amazing friends at the Sebastian County Humane Society
Today was an excruciating one for our shelter staff. Today we had to say goodbye to our sweet Cecily. After being on the IV fluids overnight she was able to stand again, we tested her for heartworms and parvo, both came back negative. Then this morning we couldn't help but notice her stool was very foul smelling and had massive amounts of blood in it. We sent her to a vet clinic for X-rays and bloodwork. The news we found out was absolutely heart wrenching. Her intestines had turned inside out from starvation and stomach was bloated full of blood and a mass. We are unsure of exactly what happened, but we believe she may have eaten rocks due to starvation. The vet told us that due to the extensive damage and deteriorated condition of Cecily that she would not be strong enough for the immediate surgeries and would not wake up from anesthesia, that putting her through those surgeries would kill her. When she was brought back to the shelter, her condition was continuing to get worse. After long discussions, we decided our best option was to put Cecily to sleep instead of letting her suffer to her death. In the short time we had Cecily in our care we all became very attached to her. When the time came she was surrounded by people that love her and she was on her favorite blanket. Today was hard, excruciating, and exhausting. We love you Cecily and wish we could've gotten you in sooner. We mourn the beautiful souls that we cannot save, and rescue the ones we can. Even though today was miserable we will march on to save the ones we can. After Cecily passed, we ran heartworm tests on several new dogs, 6 of which tested positive for heartworms. With the help of our community, and only through the help of the communtiy, we will be able to treat them, Iris, and the countless other animals that are in need. RIP Cecily and thank you for everyone that fell in love with her, whether through facebook or through working with her. She did not pass away unloved or alone. Please remember to love your pets, educate yourselves on pet welfare, and spay/neuter. If we all do that, we may see a lot less of the pain and suffering these innocent animals go through.
