Daniel McMenamin Endowment

Daniel McMenamin Endowment The Daniel McMenamin Endowment raises awareness for rare disease treatment and advocates for collaboration between doctors, researchers, and patients.

For someone diagnosed with an obscure disease, navigating the array of evolving research, clinical trials, and specialized procedures can be overwhelming. A number of factors add to the confusion, among them inconclusive research findings and the difficulty of deducing the costs and benefits of each potential option based on partial data. Harder still is the task of coordinating care across a land

scape where researchers work in different locations, at different institutions, and may not be in touch regularly regarding their findings. Often, the doctors themselves lack the resources to guide the patient through this maze, and the patient may simply, and possibly tragically, become resigned to choosing among fewer options. The Daniel McMenamin Endowment seeks to improve care, coordination, and collaboration for patients with rare diseases by increasing awareness, improving access, and fostering cooperation among patients, physicians, and researchers. Daniel Terrence McMenamin, MD (April 12, 1976–March 16, 2017) earned his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, having also studied at Cornell as an undergraduate. After completing his residency and fellowship at the NYU School of Medicine, he continued to train in psychoanalysis at Columbia University, an intensive program of study pursued by a tiny percentage of psychiatrists, while building his own successful psychiatric practice. Even during his illness, Dan never wavered in his dedication to his patients. From his first diagnosis of uveal (ocular) melanoma in 2013 to the metastasis that claimed his life in 2017, he continued to strive, in his own words, to “learn as much as possible while helping others and yourself become the best person you and they can be.”

The DME would like to thank those who’ve reached out to us after our inaugural event in April.

While our focus isn’t exclusively ocular melanoma, our first panel addressed Dr. Daniel McMenamin's experience in understanding and treating this rare condition. Panelists discussed the intricacies of making healthcare information -- from clinical data to personal records -- more accessible to researchers, clinicians, caregivers, and patients. Dr. Rainu Kaushal moderated the discussion between: Dr. Joseph Habboushe, who spoke as both a physician and Dr. McMenamin’s friend; Dr. Udai Kammula, whose research in tumor cell therapy reveals the difficulties in treating understudied diseases; Greg Allen of the NYSDOH, who seeks to improve our healthcare delivery system; and CURE Ocular Melanoma representatives, Carla Tressell and Chad Kimbler, whose own diagnoses have prompted them to advocate for others in developing a patient registry.

We'd like to thank Andrea Cohen and Weill Cornell for coordinating and hosting the event.

We continue to accept donations; please contact us if you have any inquiries.

Dear friends, family, colleagues, and peers of Dan,

As I try to draft a general "thank you all" for the holiday season, a roll call of individual acts of kindness scroll endlessly in my mind. It's been a rough year, but I'm moved by remembering all the support you've given Dan (and me) during his struggle. Seriously, thank you all.

Above all, thank you, Dan.

We gained immeasurably more from living with him than his passing could ever take. I don't mean to diminish his loss to a mere learning experience or life lesson for any of us, but as the year draws to a close, I'm amazed that my gratitude for his sharing a little bit of his life with me outweighs the devastation of grief.

With his legacy in mind, I'm proud to announce that the Daniel McMenamin Endowment's first event will take place ‪on February 13th, 2018‬. Though we've met our financial goal for 2017, which will allow his endowment to continue in perpetuity, we hope to expand and fund further projects. Please visit us at dtmfund.com and consider donating if you haven't already.

Again, thank you for everything.

Sincerely,
Susie Oh

P.S. For those of you planning to donate, you may consider doing so before the year's end, so you can take advantage of the tax deduction (before the new tax law makes itemizing deductions obsolete).
