Kool DJ Red Alert was born on November 27, 1956, in Antigua and raised in Harlem, New York City. He earned the nickname "Red Alert" for his reddish hair and sharp defensive skills on the basketball court. After attending DeWitt Clinton High School in The Bronx, he received a basketball scholarship to Hampton University but left after three semesters to pursue music.
In the late 1970s, he began attending parties in downtown New York City, influenced by DJs like Grandmaster Flowers and Pete DJ Jones. He also drew inspiration from radio personalities Frankie Crocker and Ken "Spider" Webb. On Saturday nights, he would listen to DJ Kool Herc in The Bronx and later attended parties featuring Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa. His favorite DJ was Grand Wizzard Theodore, known for his ability to blend vinyl records seamlessly.
Red started building his own record collection and DJ equipment, eventually teaching his cousin Jazzy Jay the basics of DJing. In 1982, while DJing at The Roxy, he met Barry Mayo, the program director of WRKS 98.7 Kiss FM. Impressed by Red's skills, Barry hired him to host the "KISS Master Mix Party" show in October 1983. Red Alert quickly gained popularity, breaking new acts like A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, and Black Sheep. He also played a significant role in the Roxanne Wars and The Bridge Wars, two of Hip-Hop's earliest feuds.
His fame grew as he introduced dancehall music to mainstream radio and became known for his mixtapes. He worked at KISS-FM for over 11 years before moving to Hot 97 in 1994, where he hosted the "Twelve O'Clock Old School At Noon Mix" and "The Five O'Clock Free Ride". After a brief return to KISS-FM, he joined Power 105.1FM in 2002 and later returned to KISS 98.7 FM in 2006. He performed his final mix on the station in April 2012 before it became ESPN Radio New York 98.7 FM.
Throughout his career, Red Alert toured internationally with Boogie Down Productions, Jungle Brothers, and as a solo artist. He's received numerous awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from Impact in 1998 and a Mix Show DJ of the Year award from Gavin in 1997. He is the only Hip-Hop DJ honored with a display in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Radio Section and has a spot on the Bronx Walk of Fame. He continues to influence the music industry and remains a respected figure in Hip-Hop culture.
This is far from his whole story, but I always suggest any fan of the culture learn more for themselves. Much respect to Red Alert! We appreciate your contributions to Hip-Hop.
