Extend a Helping Hand Foundation

Extend a Helping Hand Foundation We believe in a helping hand, not a handout, to create a condition in which people actively participate in the development process.

The EHH foundation is a Non-profit organazation. was established to fulfill our responsibility towards humanity regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, class, location, religion, color, cultural diversity and social background, with a special focus in countries where the majority of the population lives below the poverty line. We have also partners range from small community support groups to natio

nal alliances and international networks seeking education for all, justice and action against poverty, class and gender discrimination and natural calamity. Our work with the co-partners underlines the issues that emerge after any natural upheaval or affect poor and voiceless people. In addition to our emergency relief efforts under natural or man made disasters areas, we also work on long term relief and development program like Livelihood, Economic Empowerment, Orphan and Widows Support Program and Skill Development Program etc. We have a unique vision and direction. We don't impose solutions, but work with communities over many years to strengthen their own efforts to throw off poverty. We constantly seek new solutions and ask ourselves how we can make the greatest impact with our resources. We make the most of our skills and abilities by working at many levels - local, national, regional and international.

Feyisa Lilesa crossed the Olympics marathon finish line, and put his hands above his head in an "X." He was protesting the Ethiopian government's killing of hundreds of the country's Oromo people, an ethnic majority that has long complained about being marginalized by the country's government.

MEET THE TEEN BROTHERS BEHIND A WEB BROWSER TO RIVAL GOOGLE CHROME

Nigerian brothers Anesi, 13, and Osine Ikhianosime, 15, have developed a mobile web browser that one user has described as equally as fast as the world's fastest sprinter, Usain Bolt

On the surface, the Ikhianosime brothers are just like any other teenager boys. They love playing soccer and have a keen interest in learning new things. But can the average boy claim to have coded and designed a web browser specifically designed to work fast and seamlessly on all cellphones – particularly low-end phones?

Probably not, but it’s a claim the Ikhianosime brothers can back up. Together, the self-taught coders and interface designers developed the Android web browser they named the Crocodile Browser Lite 3.0, which has become a popular download in the Google Play store.

The idea to develop the mobile browser arose out of boredom, the brothers – who are currently in Year 9 and Year 11 at Greensprings School, Anthony Campus in Lagos, Nigeria – told Tech Cabal in an interview earlier this year.

“We were fed up with Google Chrome,” they told the publication, largely because browsers like Chrome work optimally on higher-end smart phones, but its functionality tends to slow down on lower-end phones.

According to their mother, Ngozi, the pair had shown a deep fascination with technology, building things and solving problems from a young age. In fact, the brothers learned how to use a computer before they could even read.

By the time they were 7 and 9 year, they had started their own technology company, initially called Doors – a name inspired by Microsoft Windows. After discovering that a company with that name already existed, they settled on the name Blu Doors.

Using educational sites and tutorials from the likes of Code Academy and Code Avengers, as well as books like Android for Game Development and Games for Dummies, the brothers taught themselves how to code just two years ago.

“I didn’t let my uncle’s belief that it would be a tough feat to achieve stop me. I started with Java,” Osine was quoted telling Tech Cabal.

The app is available for free and has been downloaded more than 10 000 times.

Crocodile Browser Lite has received a 4,7 out of 5 stars rating and glowing reviews.

“I have never written a review here, but I am compelled by the data processing speed and display of this app to do this. This is simply awesome. Overall I score you 110% for this stunning work and a very BIG thank you for making Nigeria proud,” one review read.

Another read: “Works incredibly well and very quick too! Absolutely amazing that two young teens created this. With some design upgrades, I’m sure it will become more and more popular.”

Another review equates the brower’s speed with the speed of the world’s fastest sprinter, Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt.

Although still in high school, the brothers plan to pursue tertiary qualifications at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, USA and are surely destined to achieve great accomplishments.

The boy behind the phone that doesn’t need airtime...

Meet Simon Petrus, a Namibian Grade 12 learner who has invented a mobile phone that is not only SIM-less, but also doesn’t require airtime to make calls

It may not be the sleek, light or slim structure that we’ve come to expect from our mobile phones, but it does the job and more importantly… it does it for free.

Using spare parts from a telephone and a television set, Petrus has built a handset that uses radio frequencies to place calls anywhere as long as there is signal. The invention also functions off power supplied through a radiator.

According to Namibian publication New Era, it took Petrus two years to develop his invention, which was funded by his unemployed parents, and cost around N$2 000 (R2 000) to produce.

The unit also features sockets that enable cellphones to be charged, a light bulb and a fan as well as the capability to watch TV through his box.

Petrus’s invention has already earned him first place in the regional leg of the NamPower schools competition and he will now go on to compete in the national finals round.

This is the second time he’s reached this stage of the competition, after clinching a gold medal last year for a two-in-one seed drier and cooler machine he invented.

Taimi Vatileni, Petrus’s physical science teacher at Abraham Iyambo Senior Secondary School in the rural Ohangwena region, says Petrus is his top performing student.

“When he won last year, some judges were of the opinion that there was an engineer at home who was helping him. But the only help he has is from us the teachers here at school. He came up with his own project,” Vatileni was quoted saying.

A young star on the rise and an African inventor to watch, Petrus has aspirations to pursue a career in electronics engineering.
