Many practitioners who study Madhyamaka never discover that the Nyingma tradition has its own rigorous and illuminating view of the Middle Way—one that connects directly to the ta***ic and Dzogchen paths.

For practitioners drawn to emptiness, this new course will guide you in an immersive exploration where you'll learn the specifically Nyingma view of what Madhyamaka is pointing toward, and why it matters for the path you're on.

Sign up to get access to one of the most complete English-language presentations of the Nyingma Madhyamaka view available in course format.

Enroll before June 28 to save $75. The course begins July 31. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/4aUjkJ8

All of us at Wisdom were deeply saddened to hear the news that Robert A.F. Thurman, prominent American Buddhist scholar, co-founder of Tibet House US, and a prolific author and translator whose teachings shaped countless lives, died Tuesday morning, June 16, in Woodstock, New York.

Bob was an incredible friend to Wisdom Publications and a towering figure in the Buddhist world. Wisdom had the great honor of working with him, the American Institute of Buddhist Studies (AIBS), the Columbia University Center for Buddhist Studies, and Tibet House US to produce The Treasury of the Buddhist Sciences, which provides authoritative translations, studies, and editions of the texts of the Tibetan Tengyur (bstan ’gyur) and its associated literature.

Bob's passing is an immense loss—for his family and friends, and for the global Dharma culture. He deeply enriched the roots of Dharma in the West and was one of the fiercest supporters of the Tibetan cause. His brilliance, compassion, and wisdom will continue to ripple outward.

TOUCHING THE EARTH: AN EXCERPT FROM ACCLAIMED AUTHOR DAVID LOY’S LATEST BOOK

We are trapped in the gap between our Paleolithic instincts and our god-like technology. In LOVING THE WORLD AS OUR BODY, David Loy dismantles the myth that we must choose between rigid religious traditions and secular detachment. Instead, he proposes a life-affirming, nondualist path: an ecological spirituality that invites us to experience the Earth not as an object to exploit, but as a sacred extension of ourselves.

AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE FOR PRACTITIONERS OF VAJRABHAIRAVA AVAILABLE ONLY FROM WISDOM

We’re honored to share with you THE EIGHTEEN STEPS OF VAJRABHAIRAVA, by the Fifth Ling Rinpoché, Losang Lungtok Tenzin Trinlé (1856–1902), and translated by Voula Zarpani. The text presented here is restricted, and this book may be read only by those who have received a highest-yoga-tantra empowerment.

This essential guide is an important collection of texts for the practice of solitary-hero and thirteen-deity Yamāntaka, composed by the Fifth Ling Rinpoché during a three-year retreat on Yamāntaka, the wrathful form of Mañjuśrī also known as Vajrabhairava. The eighteen steps provide remarkable clarity and detail on how to perform the preliminary and main practices of the approximation retreat of solitary-hero Yamāntaka as well as thirteen-deity Yamāntaka. It is essential reading for the highest-yoga-tantra practitioner.

While certain sections of the text, such as the sādhanas and the fire pūjas for the solitary-hero and the thirteen-deity Vajrabhairava, were available to qualified practitioners, the entire collection of these practices in a single volume was under a seal of secrecy and required specific permission to be read. However, in a significant development, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has recently permitted the translation and publication of this text into English, making these profound teachings accessible to English-speaking practitioners for the first time.

“The wisdom realizing emptiness (selflessness) is the principal true path because it directly contradicts ignorance.

While ignorance grasps inherent existence, the wisdom realizing emptiness sees the absence of inherent existence.

Thus it is able to completely uproot ignorance and the afflictions stemming from it. When afflictions cease, polluted karma is no longer created.

There is no further impetus to be reborn in saṃsāra, and liberation is attained.”

“There is an element of naturalness in turning to that which knows, the recognition of which can help us beware of the pitfalls of either trying to strain forward or else giving up in frustration.

The process of practice undertaken here is indeed a natural unfolding, like the blossoming of a beautiful flower.

The buds first need time to grow; they will not blossom right away. Space and consciousness are already there; there is no need to construct or fabricate them.

The habit patterns of relating to things in ways contrary to their empty nature are deeply ingrained, even though on closer inspection they turn out to be unrealistic and detrimental.

There is a need to allow time to change these habit patterns gradually. They cannot be stopped overnight simply by dint of force.

Because they are built through repetitions, they can only be undone through repetition, that is, through repeated abiding in emptiness.”

—Ven. Anālayo in Abiding in Emptiness
