WHAT’S GONE WRONG WITH HUMANITY AND HOW CAN WE FIX IT?

We’re happy to announce the official publication of LOVING THE WORLD AS OUR BODY: THE NONDUAL PATH IN A DANGEROUS TIME, the latest from acclaimed author David Loy. This is also the LAST DAY TO GET 20% OFF your copy with code LWB20, only at Wisdom.

In LOVING THE WORLD AS OUR BODY Loy explains how in the modern era, our historical frameworks for thriving in society have proven unsatisfactory—rigid, inflexible, unable to accommodate new information and ideas. As a result, some people have turned to traditional religion and some to secularism and scientific progress. Loy points to a better way: a nondualistic worldview that regards everything as a manifestation of the sacred, which we can experience when we wake up from the delusion of being a separate self in an objectified world.

This view is our way out of the quandary, and Loy shows readers how this nondualist view has actually been with us longer than we think: within the more esoteric views woven through and among a wide variety of otherwise traditional religions.

“Those who wish to crush the many sorrows of existence,
Who wish to quell the pain of living beings,
Who wish to have experience of a myriad joys
Should never turn away from bodhichitta.”

On May 19 at 12 p.m. ET, Soto Zen teacher and author Ben Connelly will join us to explore the teachings and lasting influence of Huayan Buddhism, one of the most consequential and least-known traditions in the East Asian Buddhist world. Rooted in the Avatamsaka, or Flower Garland, Sutra, Huayan is best known for the imagery of Indra’s Net—an infinite web of jewels in which each jewel reflects and contains all the others. It’s a vision of complete interdependence and one that shaped all the East Asian meditation schools.

In his recently published book from Wisdom, Inside the Flower Garland Sutra: Huayan Buddhism and the Modern World, Connelly offers a line-by-line commentary on the “Song of Dharma Nature,” a 30-line summary of the Flower Garland Sutra by the 7th-century Korean monk Uisang, situating its teachings in contemporary life and practice. Join Connelly to learn how this ancient tradition impacted Zen and Chan Buddhism, and how it speaks to challenges of the modern world.

DISCOVER THE JEWEL OF JUST THIS BY JOHN BREHM FOR 20% OFF

We’re honored to announce the official publication of JUST THIS: NEW AND SELECTED POEMS by John Brehm, 20% OFF THROUGH TODAY WITH CODE JT20.

JUST THIS offers the best of John Brehm’s poetry in one beautifully curated collection. Facing down illness and the nearness of death, Brehm writes with unfailing candor and wit about what it means to be human—to hurt, to love, to see clearly, and to let go. Drawn from both new work and earlier books, the poems reveal how his Buddhist practice has shaped and deepened his voice across twenty years of writing.
These are poems that feel like good company—wise without being solemn, intimate without being confessional, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny. For anyone moving through their own passage of difficulty or change, JUST THIS offers solace, perspective, and a quietly transformative delight.

“This is the same good that the monarchs among the sages perceived after meditating for countless cosmic ages. The growing bliss that easily comes from this thought makes the endless flood of living beings overflow with happiness.”

Celebrated Buddhist scholar Yakupitiyage Karunadasa, widely known as Y. Karunadasa, died in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on April 26 at the age of 92. A leading authority on early Buddhism and the Theravada Abhidhamma, he devoted his life to clarifying the philosophical foundations of the Buddha’s teachings with precision and depth.
