Did you know that one of the most famous "American" melodies was actually written by a Czech composer? Dvořák composed his New World Symphony while living in the New York City in the 1890s. The hauntingly beautiful Largo (slow) movement is heavily inspired by the African-American spirituals and Native American folk melodies he encountered. It captures his own intense homesickness for Europe combined with the vast, open spaces of the American prairie.

His student, William Arms Fisher, later added the poignant words to create the soul-stirring song Goin' Home.

It’s a breathtaking moment in our June 14th program that you won’t want to miss. 💔✨

Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..." 🗽

Written by Emma Lazarus in 1883 to raise funds for the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal, The New Colossus transformed Lady Liberty from a symbol of political republic into a beacon of welcome for immigrants worldwide. In "Sounds of Liberty," we pay tribute to these powerful words in the riveting and visceral arrangement by Saunder Choi.

Come experience the music inspired by this great American promise!

⏳ 🚨 THE COUNTDOWN IS ON: Exactly 2 weeks until showtime! 🚨
Coincidentally, today (May 31) is also the birthday of the ultimate American poet, Walt Whitman (born 1819)! 📜✍️ Whitman famously wrote, "I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear." Our Sounds of Liberty program is a vibrant tapestry of American music—featuring historic hymns, soul-stirring spirituals like Deep River, and modern icons like Jennifer Higdon and Dolly Parton.
