Happy Birthday Venice! ❤️🦁

According to legend, Venice was founded in the year 421, on March 25th – the Feast of the Annunciation, when the Archangel Gabriel reveals to the Virgin Mary that she will bear Christ. This symbolic alignment with the Virgin’s divine favor helped shape a powerful narrative: that Venice, too, was chosen to fulfill an ordained mission–protected, guided, and set apart from its very beginning.

This connection to the Annunciation echoes across centuries of Venetian art. Save Venice has funded the conservation of many remarkable depictions of the scene, including Titian’s masterpiece for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Thanks to the generous support of Richard K. Riess, the painting was restored in 2022–2023 by Giulio Bono and his team.

New insights from this conservation campaign are now published in “Titian & Save Venice: Conserving Six Masterpieces.”

We are excited to announce a new Women Artists of Venice (WAV) conservation project: Giulia Lama’s “Madonna and Child with Saints Peter and Magnus and the Allegory of Venice” in the church of Santa Maria Formosa.

This remarkable altarpiece, dating to the early 1720s, was likely the first ecclesiastical commission Lama received. It was created for the high altar of her parish church where she was baptized and spent her entire life in the immediate neighbourhood. The painting was removed from the high altar after the church was severely damaged during World War I. The picture was only rediscovered in storage by parish priest Father Gino Bortolan in the early 1970s and has been displayed in the apse behind the main altar of the church for the past five decades.

Conservator Claudia Vittori and her team will carry out the treatment on-site within the church. Their work will urgently address mold growth on the painted surface and lining, as well as remove oxidized varnishes and chromatically-altered inpainting from previous interventions.

Save Venice extends its heartfelt gratitude to Donna Malin for her generous support of this project.

2026 marks the 450th anniversary of Titian’s death. Reflecting on his remarkable contribution to art and enduring legacy, Save Venice is proud to present a major new publication “Titian & Save Venice: Conserving Six Masterpieces” (Marsilio Arte, 2026), edited by Dr. Davide Gasparotto and Dr. Gabriele Matino.

📅 Book presentation: Friday, March 6, 2026 | Ateneo Veneto, Venice. The event is free, open to all, and will be conducted in Italian.

🎨 About the Book
During his career, Titian produced some of the most innovative paintings of his time, becoming the most celebrated Italian painter in Europe. Since 1971, Save Venice has supported the restoration of many of his masterpieces, including:

· Saint Mark Enthroned (Basilica della Salute)
· Assumption of the Virgin and Madonna di Ca’ Pesaro Altarpiece (Basilica dei Frari)
· Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple (Gallerie dell’Accademia)
· Annunciation (Scuola Grande di San Rocco)
· Annunciation (Duomo di Treviso)

Funded by Save Venice with the support of Christopher Todd Page, this volume presents discoveries from these conservation campaigns, offering new insights into Titian’s creative process and technique, and publishing previously unseen details from the Save Venice photographic archive, alongside reflections by conservators and leading scholars. The book is published in both English and Italian editions.

Last week, scholars from around the world gathered in San Francisco for the 2026 Renaissance Society of America conference. As an associate organization of RSA, Save Venice was proud to host four dynamic panel sessions exploring “Venice as the Holy City,” with presentations on Women Artists, The Female Presence, Religious Monuments and Orations, and Relics and Patronage, as well as a fifth session entitled “Titian: Biblical and Classical Reworkings.”

We are deeply grateful to all the participating scholars for their contributions, and we extend a special thank you to Save Venice board members Prof. Patricia Fortini Brown and Prof. Sarah Blake McHam for organizing these panels.

Through conferences like these, Save Venice advances its educational mission by supporting discoveries, fostering scholarship, and creating a vibrant forum for dialogue about the art and history of Venice.

In February 2025, our supporters from around the world gathered in Venice for an unforgettable Carnevale Gala sponsored by Bottega Veneta and , to raise funds for art preservation in La Serenissima. At the legendary Palazzo L***a, Tiepolo’s transcendent frescoes illustrating the “Banquet of Antony and Cleopatra” inspired our merriment and served as a backdrop for a surprise performance of Shakespeare by Jeremy Irons & Sinéad Cusack. The evening was generously hosted by Save Venice honorary director, Dr. Frederik Paulsen, with event design by , cuisine from the Michelin-Starred , and wines from .
