Happy Birthday Venice! ❤️🦁
According to legend, Venice was founded in the year 421, on March 25th – the Feast of the Annunciation, when the Archangel Gabriel reveals to the Virgin Mary that she will bear Christ. This symbolic alignment with the Virgin’s divine favor helped shape a powerful narrative: that Venice, too, was chosen to fulfill an ordained mission–protected, guided, and set apart from its very beginning.
This connection to the Annunciation echoes across centuries of Venetian art. Save Venice has funded the conservation of many remarkable depictions of the scene, including Titian’s masterpiece for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Thanks to the generous support of Richard K. Riess, the painting was restored in 2022–2023 by Giulio Bono and his team.
New insights from this conservation campaign are now published in “Titian & Save Venice: Conserving Six Masterpieces.”
