ORA: Organization for the Resolution of Agunot The Organization for the Resolution of Agunot (ORA) is a not-for-profit organization that assists in the timely resolution of contentious Jewish divorces.

All of ORA's services are provided free of charge. An agunah (pl: agunot) is a woman who is chained to a dead marriage. The agunah crisis is prevalent in Jewish communities throughout the world and across the denominational spectrum. ORA advocates for the timely and unconditional issuance of a Get as a separate matter from the resolution of all other contentious issues in a divorce. We work on cases regardless of which spouse is refusing to participate in the get process. ORA's signature educational program, the Agunah Prevention Initiative, raises awareness in Jewish communities and schools about the plight of agunot and the preventative solution of the halakhic prenuptial agreement (The Prenup). The program empowers its participants to protect themselves through the marriage process and serve as advocates within their own communities. ORA seeks to establish The Prenup as a community-wide standard and foster a culture that does not tolerate manipulation of the Jewish divorce process.

We are so excited to share that we will once again be partnering with Jewish Women International to offer workshops on Job & Emotional Readiness. The workshops will be presented by Sierra Schnitzer, LMHC. Please see the attached flyer for details about the dates and specific topics. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Abuse does not always end when a relationship does. It can carry on.

For someone experiencing get-refusal, the Jewish divorce process can become another place where power and control are weaponized. That is why understanding get-abuse is essential to building safer, more responsive Jewish communities.
This October, ORA’s Cheirut Summit brings together advocates and experts from around the world for a series of conversations about the realities of get-refusal and the systems surrounding it.
We’ll explore questions including: Why is get-refusal a form of domestic abuse? What does survivor-led advocacy look like? How does Beit Din work, and how can our communities respond more effectively?
Our first session begins October 13.
These are conversations our communities need to be having. Whether you are a rabbi, educator, communal professional, advocate, or simply someone who wants to better understand how to support survivors, we hope you’ll join us.

Get-refusal doesn’t only prevent someone from moving forward. It can take away something that can never be returned: time.

For someone who hopes to remarry and build a family, months or years spent waiting for a get can have profound consequences.
And sometimes, that’s the point.
When a person deliberately uses those hopes, and the reality that fertility changes over time, as leverage, time itself becomes a tool of coercive control.

No one’s future should be held hostage.
