Volunteers of America-Greater New York is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area.

Volunteers of America-Greater New York is a member of the national organization, Volunteers of America—one of the oldest and largest human services nonprofits in the country, founded in 1896. We have 66 social services programs throughout New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness, including veterans and those escaping domestic violence, vulnerable older adults, at-risk youth, children with developmental delays, adults living with HIV/AIDS, and individuals with behavioral health and substance use challenges.

Big News! 🎉 Our Hillside Grove development in Staten Island has been awarded the Blue Ribbon for Distinguished Design Excellence from New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's Buildings of Excellence competition!

As a part of a broader initiative to revitalize Staten Island’s North Shore, Hillside Grove is designed with sustainability and community in mind—bringing affordable housing, a public plaza, and a grocery store to the community. This award reflects the thoughtful, forward-looking design going into every detail of this new construction project.

Thank you to our collaborators Spatial Equity, Nehemiah HDFC, Purpose by Design Architects, Ametrine Group, NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD) and New York City Department of City Planning for making this vision a reality! 💙

Another incredible day on the course with The Honickman Companies’ 7th Annual Golf Invitational! ⛳💙

This year’s event raised $645,000 to benefit VOA-GNY, UNCF, Covenant House Pennsylvania, and Philabundance– bringing the total raised to more than $3.2 million since the invitational began in 2020. VOA-GNY is honored to receive $250,000 from this year’s event to support our services for families and individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Special thanks to Reginald Goins, President & COO of the Honickman Companies and VOA-GNY Board Chair, for once again matching all contributions through the Angela and Reginald Goins Charity Fund.

Today, we pause to remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and those whose lives were forever changed.

We remain deeply grateful to the first responders who demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness, and to the frontline workers and human services staff who continued to show up with care and compassion to support their community in the difficult days that followed.

September 11 reminds us that in times of tragedy and darkness, there is strength in unity—showing up for our neighbors when they need us most.

🎒✨Happy first day of school!
As NYC students head back to the classroom, we’re taking a moment to celebrate everyone who made this year’s Operation Backpack® possible. Because of your incredible generosity, over 29,000 backpacks were collected for children experiencing homelessness across New York City, helping students start the school year with the supplies they need to feel ready to learn.

For families, the back-to-school season can come with a lot of stress and uncertainty. As Tabitha, a parent at one of our family shelters in Brooklyn, shared, “It’s a lot of overwhelm that comes with going back to school, so this definitely alleviates a lot of that. It’s actually very nice.”

To our incredible volunteers, corporate partners, donors, supporters, the New York City Council and everyone who helped make Operation Backpack® happen: thank you💙 Together, we’re helping make sure children experiencing homelessness can walk into the classroom ready for a new school year!📚✏️🎒

The countdown to the first day of school is on! 📚 Students at one of our family shelters in Brooklyn are excited to show off their new backpacks, filled with school supplies! 🎒📓✏️�

Through , students got to choose from a wide variety of backpacks that reflect their personal style, making the back-to-school experience a little more special. ✨

A big thank you to Erin Dalton, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Social Services, and Reesa Henderson, Agency Administrator at NYC Department of Homeless Services, for joining us at our Operation Backpack® event! Your support is critical to the success of this campaign and our shared efforts to ensure children living in NYC shelters have the tools they need to start the school year ready to learn and thrive. �

300 backpacks. One big impact. 🎒💙
A big thank you to the YP Foundation for supporting Operation Backpack® and helping provide NYC students living in shelters with the school supplies they need to start the school year feeling prepared, confident, and ready to learn.

During their visit to the Operation Backpack warehouse, YP Foundation volunteers helped pack 300 backpacks for NYC students! We were happy to have Rosa Wong, one of VOA-GNY’s newest Board members and Director of the YP Foundation, join us at the warehouse for the day. We’re grateful to the YP Foundation and its volunteers for showing up for the students and families we serve!

For Quincy Hernandez, Case Manager & Housing Specialist at Paul Family Residence, every family's journey to permanent housing starts with one thing: trust.

Navigating New York City's housing system can be overwhelming, especially for families experiencing homelessness. Quincy meets clients with empathy first—listening to their concerns, helping them understand their options, and guiding them through every step of the housing process.

Early in his role, Quincy worked with a migrant family of six who had already cycled through multiple case managers. Though new to the position, he took the initiative to research solutions, seek guidance, and stay with the family until they secured a permanent home. It became his first successful move-out—and a moment that shaped his career.

"Earning their trust by consistently showing up—that's what stays with me," Quincy says.

Today, a growing collection of family photos on his office door celebrates every successful move into permanent housing. So far, Quincy has helped 21 families find a place to call home.

Thank you, Quincy, for your compassion, persistence, and unwavering commitment to helping families build brighter futures.
