- Peru is among several Latin American countries where press freedom is being steadily degraded. Nicaragua and Venezuela are run by authoritarian regimes that have radically rolled back press freedom, and CPJ has documented how presidents and politicians in Mexico, Brazil, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Guatemala have taken steps to control the courts, oversight agencies and security forces, using them to suppress the opposition and intimidate journalists. Journalists are also being squeezed by new laws to control the foreign financing of civil society organizations like IPYS and Asociación Nacional de Periodistas del Perú (ANP).

“Peru’s justice system, overall, is inadequate and slow. That has left the press as the main watchdog mechanism over politicians, economic elites and criminal organizations,” Roberto Pereira, a lawyer and board member for the Lima-based Institute for Press and Society (IPYS), told CPJ. “All this has turned the press into a target for politicians.”

The 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, which spans events across Canada, Mexico and the United States, will have an estimated 50,000 FIFA accredited journalists and media workers alongside many other reporters covering every aspect of the games, on and off the pitch.  The Committee to Protect Journalists...

- Colombian authorities must swiftly investigate the killing of journalist and press freedom advocate Cristian Herrera Nariño, determine if he was targeted for his work, and bring those responsible to justice.

“This is the second journalist to be killed in Colombia in a month. Clearly, the government is not providing journalists with even the most basic safety measures,” said Cristina Zahar, Latin America program coordinator, in São Paulo. “CPJ calls on the authorities to bring both Cristian Herrera’s and Mateo Pérez Rueda’s killers to justice.”

“This crime undermines press freedom by silencing a critical regional voice. Moreover, it has a serious impact on FLIP by depriving it of one of its members…and by placing at risk—and intimidating—the organization’s work in defending the rights of journalists,” Fundación para la Libertad de Prensa - FLIP said in a June 6 statement.

Mexican authorities must immediately investigate the abduction of journalist Roxana Berenice Guzmán Rodríguez, establish the motive and ensure she is freed unharmed, the Committee to Protect Journalists.

“The brazen kidnapping of Roxana Guzmán in broad daylight is shocking even in Mexico, which holds the abysmal status of being the country with the highest number of disappeared journalists in the world,” said Jan-Albert Hootsen, CPJ’s Mexico representative. “The alarming incident once again reveals how criminal violence and impunity continue to make Mexico the deadliest country for journalists in the western hemisphere, and it is imperative that authorities in Veracruz ensure Guzmán’s return to her family and bring her attackers to justice.”

The Committee to Protect Journalists and partner organizations issued a statement Friday condemning the May 31 arrest of at least three journalists who were covering protests near the Delaney Hall immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey. Law enforcement used crowd “kettling” to circle a group of press and protesters, preventing their movement. Police allowed some journalists to leave, but three were arrested and held overnight, according to multiple reports.

The U.S. Press Freedom Tracker is investigating dozens of other cases of assault against journalists at protests near Delaney Hall since detainees launched a hunger strike and work stoppage on May 22. Authorities also damaged journalists’ equipment in five incidents, and one local county sergeant has been charged with theft of a journalist’s camera bag.

The Defense Department oversees the country’s armed forces and commands a nearly $1 trillion budget in 2026. A departure from longstanding norms and Constitutionally guaranteed media access at the Pentagon carries significant implications for press freedom in the United States as well as for public understanding of the impact of U.S. military spending and actions.

Here are five things you need to know about how the Defense Department is restricting press freedom in the United States:
