- On the evening of September 10, unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle fired gunshots at the office of La Noticia Clave in the northern town of Lambayeque near the Pacific coast, according to the National Association of Journalists of Peru (ANP) and the Lima-based Institute for Press and Society (IPYS).

The gunmen shot four times at the office while La Noticia Clave director Johnny Namuche and another journalist were inside the building, Namuche told CPJ in a voice message. He said the news outlet had not previously been threatened but said the attack came in the wake of a La Noticia Clave report about possible medical malpractice by a local hospital.

“This attack highlights the dangerous environment that Peruvian local media outlets face when reporting on matters of public interest against all odds,” said Cristina Zahar, CPJ Latin America program coordinator, in São Paulo. “The Peruvian authorities must fight impunity by identifying and holding those responsible to account.”

- The Committee to Protect Journalists is alarmed to learn that Haitian journalist Wesly Renaud Jean was abducted by armed gang members in the Delmas 31 neighborhood of Port-au-Prince on Sunday evening and calls on Haitian authorities to swiftly secure his safe release.

Jean, 46, is a veteran journalist and has co-hosted the major morning news program on Radio-TV Métropole for over 10 years. A witness reported his kidnapping to colleagues, though it is unclear if his abduction is related to his work.

“The kidnapping of veteran Haitian journalist Wesly Renaud Jean is deeply alarming and highlights the growing threat that rampant gang violence poses to journalists in Haiti,” said José Zamora, CPJ’s regional director for the Americas. “Haitian authorities must act urgently to secure Jean’s safe release, investigate his abduction, and take concrete steps to protect journalists from escalating violence and insecurity.”

- The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on Haitian authorities to swiftly and comprehensively conduct an investigation into the murder of Haitian community radio host Joseph Willard Vancol whose remains were found Wednesday nearly three weeks after he was abducted by armed men in Gressier.

“The abduction and brutal killing of Joseph Willard Vancol is a horrifying reminder of the deadly violence and impunity confronting journalists and community media workers in Haiti,” said José Zamora, CPJ’s regional director for the Americas. “Haitian authorities must conduct a swift and credible investigation, bring Vancol’s killers to justice, and take concrete steps to protect journalists from escalating gang violence.”

- The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on the Cuban government to cease its harassment of the Cuban couple, Yunia Figueredo and Frank Correa, who are facing persistent legal threats because of their journalistic activities.
