Anne Frank Center, USA

Anne Frank Center, USA We empower young people to become courageous changemakers by fostering empathy, understanding and action against intolerance. This is our promise.

We exist to empower young people to become courageous changemakers by fostering empathy, understanding and action against intolerance. We believe in the power of young people to change the world. Through the timeless voice of Anne Frank, we are reminded that even in the darkest of times, courage, empathy, and hope can illuminate the path forward. Her story is not just a window into the past—it is

a call to action for the future. To honor Anne Frank’s legacy by ensuring her message of hope, resilience, and the fight against intolerance resonates with future generations, the Anne Frank Center USA has grown from a focused effort on preserving Anne’s diary and legacy into a dynamic force for social change. We empower the next generation to confront intolerance, to challenge prejudice, and build bridges of understanding in order to prevent bigotry, antisemitism, racism, and discrimination. By fostering empathy and promoting action, we transform passive witnesses into active change agents, ready to stand against hate and create a more compassionate and just world. We believe that education is a catalyst for change. By teaching the lessons of history, we inspire young people to question, to speak out, and lead with compassion. Our transformative education through the arts empowers people to see beyond stereotypes and divisions, embrace our shared humanity, and recognize the profound impact of their choices. The courage to act starts with the courage to care. Together, we honor Anne Frank’s legacy by amplifying her message: that every voice matters, and that small acts of kindness, bravery, and understanding can shape the course of history. We are dreamers of a better tomorrow and builders of a brighter today. With empathy as our foundation, education as our tool, and action as our purpose, we invite you to join us in creating a world where every individual— no matter their background—is treated with dignity and respect. This is our mission. Together, we will foster courage. Together, we will inspire action. Together, we will make change.

------------

The Anne Frank Center USA traces its roots to the efforts of Anne Frank’s father, Otto Frank, who sought to preserve his daughter’s legacy. In the 1950s, Otto Frank worked tirelessly to raise funds in the U.S. to support the restoration of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. His determination led to the establishment of the Anne Frank Foundation in New York, which was dedicated to raising funds for this cause. Key figures such as Senator John F. Kennedy and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt supported his mission, and Otto Frank’s efforts proved successful when the Anne Frank House opened its doors to the public in 1960. As the movement to honor Anne’s legacy gained momentum, the Anne Frank Foundation evolved into the Anne Frank Center USA, securing official 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 1977. Under the leadership of Holocaust survivor Jack P***k, the organization grew to become a powerful voice for combating prejudice and promoting tolerance. P***k’s tireless work on behalf of the Center earned him a knighthood by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1992, acknowledging his lifelong commitment to the values Anne Frank stood for. While the Anne Frank Center USA has evolved over the years, its mission remains firmly rooted in Anne Frank’s enduring legacy – a message of hope and resilience to empower the next generation. Today, our decentralized structure means we’re able direct most of our funds toward educational programs and outreach, ensuring that the impact of our work is felt far and wide, and allowing us to amplify Anne Frank’s message to more communities across the country.

Today would have been Anne Frank's 97th birthday.

When Anne received her diary on her 13th birthday in 1942, she could not have known that her words would become one of the most widely read accounts of the Holocaust and a powerful reminder of our shared humanity.

Nearly eight decades after her death, Anne's voice continues to reach new generations, challenging us to confront prejudice, defend human dignity, and choose empathy over hate.

Today, we are honored to celebrate Anne's legacy with the launch of , a new educational initiative on Instagram and TikTok designed to bring Anne's story to young people where they are learning, connecting, and engaging online.

We invite you to follow and help ensure that Anne's voice continues to inspire action, understanding, and hope.

The Anne Frank Center USA CEO, Dr. Lauren Bairnsfather, and Education Specialist, Katie Meade, were in Birmingham, Alabama, this week for the Teaching the Holocaust Conference hosted by the Alabama Holocaust Education Center.

Lauren’s presentation, "Teaching Anne Frank in the Larger Context of the Holocaust," explored how the Frank family’s story can serve as a powerful entry point for understanding the history of the Jewish Diaspora as well as the broader history of N**i persecution and the Holocaust. While many of the educators at the conference teach Social Studies, the English Language Arts teachers who attended Lauren’s session left with tools to bring history into their classrooms to enhance their teaching of Anne Frank’s diary.

Every seat was filled for Katie’s presentation, “Exploring the Story of Anne Frank through the Arts.” A hands-on workshop, the session equipped educators with creative, trauma-informed strategies for teaching Anne Frank and the Holocaust through the Arts. Topics included storytelling, visual art, and improvisational exercises to foster empathy, critical thinking, and meaningful engagement. Teachers left this energetic and thought-provoking session with lessons to implement in their classrooms that will both engage and support students.

Thank you to Lisa Bachman and her team at the Alabama Holocaust Education Center for inviting us. Alabama is leading the country with clear Holocaust Education standards and support for teachers. We were honored to join educators, scholars, and advocates from across the country, including Erin Gruwell from the Freedom Writers Foundation, who are committed to ensuring that Holocaust education remains accurate, meaningful, and relevant for future generations.

Anne Frank never made it to the United States, despite Otto Frank’s connections to New York and his friendship with the influential businessman and philanthropist Nathan Straus.

As Jewish American Heritage Month comes to a close, we remember Anne, Margot, and Edith Frank with an abiding grief for what might have been had they found refuge on American shores.

For more about Otto Frank’s efforts to immigrate to the United States, see:

Otto Frank escaped N**i Germany with his wife and two daughters soon after Hi**er came to power in 1933. They lived a peaceful life in Amsterdam until May 1940, when N**i Germany invaded the Netherlands. Otto, determined to leave Europe with his family, contacted an old college friend in the United....

This week kicked off our Art of Self-Discovery residency with 4th graders in Rockwood, Queens. After meeting Anne through our "Conversations with Anne" performance, they created their own diaries. Just as Anne named hers "Kitty," students gave names to their diaries and, inspired by Anne's writings, will be creating new mixed media entries in them each week.

Starting at sundown, Jews around the world celebrate Shavuot, a holiday connected to learning, reflection, and moral responsibility.

Shavuot marks the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and is traditionally observed through study, discussion, and gathering together to explore timeless questions about justice, humanity, and our responsibilities toward one another.

These themes of Shavuot remain relevant today:
Lifelong learning
Asking meaningful questions
Personal growth
Responsibility to others
Passing wisdom from one generation to the next

Shavuot also resonates with the legacy of Anne Frank. Through her diary, Anne reflected on humanity, challenged herself to grow, and expressed her belief in the possibility of goodness even while in hiding for more than two years from the N**is in occupied Amsterdam.

Today, Anne's words inspire generations to learn from the past, challenge prejudice, and build a more compassionate and just future.

We wish you a Chag Shavuot Sameach.

Today, our Program Manager Alex Gellner is attending the Center for Jewish-Inclusive Learning's Educational Leadership Conference on Antisemitism & Jewish Inclusion in New York.

Held in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month, the conference brings together NYC Public Schools leaders to explore the Jewish experience and strengthen the collective ability to foster inclusion across our school system.

This work is close to our hearts at the Anne Frank Center USA — it's exactly what drives our in-school performances and workshops every day. Through our programs, we bring these vital conversations directly into classrooms, giving students and educators the tools to recognize antisemitism, embrace inclusion, and carry Anne Frank's legacy forward.

We're proud to have Alex at the table, and proud to be doing this work in partnership with schools and communities across the country.
