For the music lovers: three pieces this fall where the sound is made live, in the room, by the people you’re watching.

Mirlitons brings choreographer François Chaignaud together with beatboxer Aymeric Hainaux on an arena-like stage. Through their voices, feet, arms, props and costumes, the two build something that is part rhythm battle, part dance, part spectacle.

In Ad Libitum, Ulysse Zangs composes the score live, moving between drums, electric guitar and synth, following the movement of dancer Simon Le Borgne.
Nexus de l’adoration gathers nine officiants as the believers of an invented religion, one whose aim is to sing every sound in the world.

MOI, UN NOIR (1958) by Jean Rouch, presented by J. Hoberman

Jean Rouch follows a young man from Niger through an ordinary week in Abidjan, where he works the docks by day and calls himself Edward G. Robinson by night. Made with the longshoreman Oumarou Ganda, the film hands its subjects the microphone and lets them narrate their own lives.

What emerged was a new genre, ethnofiction. “Rouch invented the French New Wave,” writes Hoberman, who presents the film and takes it up in his essay “Moi, un noir: The Film is the Search.”

The screening marks the publication of Across the Movi-verse, a new anthology of his uncollected writing. Book signing to follow.

Screening alongside our Godard series, who called it the greatest French film since the Liberation.

Before Traces of Gounouj arrives on Governors Island this October, we sat down with choreographer Léo Lérus and dancer Robert Cornejo to talk about this piece work, the landscapes of Léo’s native Guadeloupe, and what it means to bring a piece so rooted in a specific place and ecology to New York City.

Traces of Gounouj brings together dancers Asha Thomas and Robert Cornejo in excerpts of a work inspired by Guadeloupe’s natural beauty and its resilient, complicated relationship with human activity.

NEW YORK TIMES SPOTLIGHT ON CAMILLE HENROT AND CROSSING THE LINE 🗞️

Camille Henrot, hailed by the Times as the “standard-bearer of the interdisciplinary artist today,” makes her playwriting debut by bringing 500 years of Italian comic theater into a New York apartment building, complete with a landlord from hell.

Only three performances, September 23–26 at Florence Gould Theater.

Bright colors. Acrobatics. The eerie sense of something watching.

The Birds is the New York premiere of choreographer Lenio Kaklea’s latest work, co-presented by PS21: Center for Contemporary Performance in Chatham, NY. Kaklea returns to CTL after Αγρίμι / Fauve in 2024, and this time she is looking up. Drawing on the ways birds structure their behavior through movement and song (mating rituals, hunting patterns, the complex choreography of survival) she asks what it means to want to be seen and heard, and what it costs.
