Extreme rains have caused severe
flooding across Mozambique, affecting hundreds of
thousands of people and damaging key roads and
access routes. When roads break, help can’t reach
families, and communities get cut off.

📍 Our biggest concern is in Sofala — especially Búzi
— where flooding and damaged access are hitting rural
areas hard. We’re also closely monitoring impacts in
Inhambane.

🌽 The next emergency is food.
Flooded fields mean lost maize harvests, right when
many families rely on them most. Maize is a staple —
and when it’s gone, households face an immediate drop
in food and income. The consequence isn’t abstract:
the risk of hunger in the coming months is real.

This is why we will need support to respond and help
communities recover: emergency assistance, seeds
and tools, restoring household gardens, and
strengthening resilience so families can rebuild faster.

Today we bring you very bad news. The Búzi River has overflowed again, and the district has recorded new floods and inundations, forcing many families living in low-lying areas to move to safer places.

In less than 20 days—after a first wave of water at the end of December that affected more than 5,000 families—the waters have once again reached farmland and communities (Grudja, Bândua, Inharongue, and neighborhoods in the town of Búzi). The damage is once again enormous.

🌽 Most concerning:
We still don’t have photos of all the fields, but what we are seeing is alarming: maize and crops have been devastated by the water, and many communities have been left without maize seeds to sow again.

This is critical because maize flour is the main staple food for the families we work with. If replanting cannot happen, an even more severe hunger crisis is expected in the coming months.

🤝 We are in постоян contact with our team on the ground and monitoring the situation closely.

If you’d like to help, you can do so through a financial contribution to mobilize support (seeds and urgent response), or by helping us share this so it reaches more people.
📩 Send us a DM if you can support—or connect us with someone who can. Thank you so much💚

🌿 Throughout December, we carried out several reforestation activities with the goal of continuing to improve the environment we’ve been working on alongside local communities for some time.

In total, we planted no fewer than 1,707 plants, with the participation of around 109 community members (with a very strong female presence 💚!). Here’s the breakdown:

📍 Plants reforested by area
• Nhaumue: 395 plants 🌱
• Daca: 411 plants 🌱
• Mangunde: 455 plants 🌱
• Maguénhe: 446 plants 🌱

👥 Community participation
• Nhaumue: 14 people (6 men, 8 women)
• Daca: 37 people
• Mangunde: 14 people (5 men, 9 women)
• Maguénhe: 44 people (15 men, 29 women)

As you can see in the photos, even the youngest joined in. Because every plant counts: reforestation isn’t just about “planting trees”—it’s about protecting soil, water, and the future 🌍✨

This year we would like to share with you a very special message of thanks that comes directly from Mozambique 💚

José, coordinator of the Escolas de Paz programme in Mangunde, has sent us this letter to thank you for making it possible to hold the Christmas meal for more than a hundred girls and boys from the community:

First of all, we would like to wish a very Merry Christmas to everyone in the different corners of the world where you may be, and to thank those who shared part of their resources to make the Christmas solidarity celebration here in Mangunde possible, bringing smiles and the opportunity to experience this moment of togetherness.

Yesterday the Christmas lunch took place in Mangunde, and more than a hundred children who managed to reach the meeting place were able to enjoy it. However, due to flooded streams and the impassability of most of the access roads, there were children who, despite wishing very much to take part, were unable to attend — such as those from Toronga.

Even so, in the midst of persistent rain and prolonged, repeated power cuts, the solidarity Christmas celebration was able to take place — here already known as the Christmas lunch celebration — and the participants were filled with joy in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Nevertheless, because of these factors, it was only around 4:00 pm that the cooking could be finished and the meal served.

It is also important to note that the Buzi River has already flooded, washing away most of the crops along its banks.

We would also like to highlight that this year, due to the rain and the prolonged and repeated power cuts, organising this event was not easy at all. Even so, it happened, and on behalf of the children we would like to express our sincerest thanks for the support of everyone who made it possible.

On behalf of the whole Azada Verde team:
Thank you for making it possible.
Thank you for walking alongside us.
Thank you for being there.

We wish you a very Merry Christmas! 🎉🎄🙌🏾💚

🎄 Everything is ready to celebrate Christmas with the little ones.

Today, thanks to your support, we are once again able to organize a Christmas meal for the boys and girls in our “Escolas de Paz” program in Mozambique.

For us, there is no better gift this Christmas than seeing their joy and excitement on this special day.

Merry Christmas 💚

We know these days can be intense and that it’s not always easy to keep up with everything. Even so, we haven’t lost hope of making a second Guillem Scholarship possible before the year ends.

Thanks to the support received, we’ve already been able to fund one full scholarship and the Christmas meal for the boys and girls in the Escolas de Paz program.

We’re now halfway to the second one. There are only a few days left, and if you’d like to contribute, every donation helps us get a little closer. 🌱

Thanks to the solidarity concert held in Barcelona, and thanks to the Christmas meal that so many people supported, we have already raised enough for one and a half scholarships so that students in the programme can continue their studies beyond secondary school.

We are enormously grateful for this 💚

And now we have a very clear opportunity ahead of us: to close the year with two full Guillem Scholarships and make this the most special year in Azada Verde’s history.

If we manage to secure this second full scholarship before the end of the year, two young people will be able to continue their higher education in 2026, without having to abandon their studies due to lack of resources.

We know we may be asking a lot, and if now isn’t the right time for you, we completely understand. But if this dream moves you as much as it moves us, we would be thrilled to achieve it together.

🚧🌱 Building safe spaces for children

We are currently building two outdoor bathrooms for a community building where children from the Escolas de Paz program will be able to take part in extracurricular activities in a safe and appropriate space, instead of having to do so outdoors.

This building and the bathrooms are part of the same intervention we are developing simultaneously, with the aim of ensuring dignified, safe and suitable conditions for children and the wider community.

A project made possible thanks to the funding of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, which supports basic infrastructure projects with strong social and educational impact.

We keep building the future, step by step 💚

🌿 Moving forward together in Inhambane 🌿

Over the past two weeks, we’ve taken some very important steps in the project:

✔ We expanded the nursery
✔ We collected seeds and prepared the bags
✔ We continued monitoring in Josina and Machavenga

We also welcomed Samuel, Director of Azada Verde Mozambique, and met with key local institutions (SDAI, Fisheries, and INOM) — a very positive moment to strengthen collaboration with the government and move ahead with the next phases of the project.

We wrapped up the year with community leaders, sharing clearly what comes next and how we will continue walking forward together 💚

This week, we carried out measurements in 10 plots of healthy mangrove biomass, and on Thursday we received a field visit from the Director of Environment together with the UPC. We feel deeply supported in the territory.

Finally, we want to thank Gorka (UPC – Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) for helping us open new doors for future collaborations.

We keep moving 🌱

💧🌱 Turning on a tap and seeing water flow.

For many people in Europe, it’s an automatic gesture.
For the Mangunde community, it’s a reason to dance, to celebrate, and to hope.

A few days ago, we finished installing a solar irrigation system, and when the tap was opened for the first time, the water began to flow… and with it, happiness. Because this water means they can now irrigate their fields with ease, farm all year round, and produce food that will help them break free from hunger and poverty.

Moments like this remind us why we do what we do.
Because it’s not just about infrastructure, but about dignity, opportunities, and future.

These are the moments that give us the strength to keep fighting every day to change the lives of these families. 💚

Little by little, we continue moving forward, and we’ve just finished building our 3rd solar irrigation system, this time in the community of Toronga, home to 1,035 people.

The system consists of 6 solar panels and 2 tanks of 10,000 liters each, and it will allow the irrigation of around 4 hectares of farmland belonging to about 30 families, 18 of which are headed by women. All of this without the need for fossil fuels and without generating any kind of waste.

We hope that from now on these families will be able to produce enough diverse food to climb out of the pit of hunger and poverty.

Many thanks to all our collaborators for making this possible 💚
