ARTIST PROFILE

Creativity runs in the family. GEM YONZON BLANCO came from celebrated pedigree artists; she is kin to the illustrious Yonzon family of artists. Her father, Felicisimo C. Yonzon, was a zarzuela actor, scriptwriter, and visual artist. At a young age, Gem showed exemplary talent in the arts. In her early school life, she joined art competitions both local and international. In Letran High School, she became a member of the Literary and Dramatics Club; her work won the Raya On-the-Spot Painting Contest and was exhibited at the Jose Rizal Library in Calamba. During her college days, theater guild interests embraced her life as she became the theater's poster designer, showcase director, and production designer.

This artist is also an art teacher, readily sharing her love and passion with inquisitive students. Under the UNICEF-assisted project, Gem shared her artistic ability; her works were shown at the Universal Exposition in Seville, Spain, in 1992.
She taught art at the Annual Summer Art Program of the Angono Artists Association, Inc., and handled Special Programs for the Arts (SPA) in public and private schools nationwide. Indeed, Gem has the gift of creative expression, which she passionately extends to others.

Maligayang Bagong Taon po sa lahat, and as
part of our Pasasalamat and Pag-Alala
Project, we present with pride, another founding member of Freedom Art Society, a consummate artist, a business owner, and a steady pillar of his community, ALVIN MONTANO! Alvin Montano

JOHN ALVIN L. MONTANO

Contemporary Realism | Philippines
Born in Pasig City, Metro Manila in 1972, John Alvin L. Montano—known professionally as Alvin—is a Filipino visual artist whose work is rooted in contemporary realism, with a strong focus on the human figure, portraiture, landscapes, and still life. He lives and works in Batasan Hills, Quezon City, maintaining a lifelong commitment to both artistic practice and community engagement.

Alvin earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines–Diliman in 1994, where he developed a disciplined foundation in form, anatomy, and observational drawing. Working across oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, and graphite, his paintings reveal a refined sensitivity to light, shadow, and emotional nuance—balancing technical precision with expressive depth.
His portraits move beyond surface likeness, revealing layered narratives shaped by subtle expressions and quiet gestures. In his figure works, Alvin captures the rhythm and grace of the human form with reverence and restraint, allowing movement, anatomy, and emotion to coexist harmoniously on the canvas. Across all subjects, his art celebrates the extraordinary within everyday life, transforming ordinary moments into meditative reflections on resilience, dignity, and the human spirit.

Beyond the studio, Alvin is deeply engaged in cultural leadership and artistic community building. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Philippine Pastel Artists, Inc., is a Director of the Progressive Artists’ Society of the Philippines – Manila Chapter, and is a member of the Filipino Portrait Artists Guild. Freedom Art Society is proud to count John Alvin L. Montano as one of its founding members, recognizing his enduring commitment to artistic excellence, mentorship, and collective creative growth.
Parallel to his artistic practice, Alvin also leads in the field of community health as President of Community Health Education Emergency Rescue Services (CHEERS) Corporation, a role that further grounds his work in service, compassion, and lived human experience.

For Alvin, art is both refuge and calling—a space where time slows, stories surface, and imagination takes form. His work invites viewers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the quiet power of seeing.

Magandang umaga po! As part of our Pasasalamat and Pagalala project and exhibit, we would like to bring to you our featured artists this week. Next one on our list is another one of Freedom Art Society's founding members -- Architect, Visual Farmer, Business Owner, and Prolific Visual Artist--FREDI AGUNOY..
--------------
Fredi Agunoy, born in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija in 1959, began painting in 2010. His first works were abstract pieces inspired by the energy and movement of Jackson Po***ck.

As he continued to paint, his style shifted into figurative expressionism. Fredi works without sketches or plans—he starts with a blank canvas and lets the imagery develop naturally through his brushwork.

When the pandemic struck the Philippines in March 2020, his art changed again. The tension and uncertainty of the time led him toward deeper figurative distortion, shaping the expressive style he now explores through watercolor and acrylic.
