Last night, the QSSI dedicated an exceptional evening to Rafael Guastavino, whose pioneering tile vault system helped define some of New York City’s most iconic spaces from Grand Central Terminal to St. John the Divine.

The program offered a complete perspective on his legacy: curator Janet Parks presented an overview of Guastavino’s professional achievements and architectural impact while author Javier Moro explored the personal journey behind the man and introduced the new English translation of his book “The Architect of New York.”

We extend special thanks to the Spanish Women Society, the AIANY Historic Buildings Committee, and the Cultural Office of the Consulate of Spain in New York for their generous support.

History came to life in downtown Mobile, AL through a powerful reenactment of the 1780 Battle of Fort Charlotte when Spanish forces captured the fort from the British during the American Revolution.

Held at Fort Charlotte, the reenactment highlighted one of the several Revolutionary War battles fought along the Gulf Coast, a defining moment in Spain’s southern campaign led by General Bernardo de Gálvez.

The Queen Sofía Spanish Institute contributed primary sources for the script and the actor portraying Gálvez to ensure historical accuracy and depth to the performance.

This project, in collaboration with History Museum of Mobile and Alabama 250, underscored the importance of connecting local history to the broader story of the American Revolution.

📍The QSSI held a landmark evening for the first-ever America&Spain250 program in Alabama.

Hosted at the History Museum of Mobile, the event explored Spain’s role on the Gulf Coast during the American Revolution and the leadership of Bernardo de Gálvez.

Author Mike Bunn and Prof. Thomas Chávez provided insightful contributions alongside a reenactment of Gálvez that transported the audience back in time.

We were especially touched by the warmth and generosity of Mobile. Thank you for such a special welcome!

Special thanks to the Daughters of the American Revolution for hosting a beautiful reception at the Richards-DAR House Museum
