In 2026, someone dies in ICE custody every six days.

Javier came to the U.S. seeking asylum and was instead detained by ICE, transferred over ten times across facilities, and denied medical care for a serious health condition.

NYLPI, alongside our Medical Providers Network and pro bono partners, secured a landmark habeas ruling finding his detention conditions unconstitutional.

Javier is now free.

That's a wrap on the 23rd Annual Michael Rothenberg Memorial Golf Outing! ⛳

On May 13, we returned to Bethpage State Park for another great day on the green, celebrating the legacy of Michael Rothenberg, NYLPI's former Executive Director and one of the nation's leading public interest attorneys. Over 100 golfers took on the Red and Black Courses, with others sharpening their skills at the Beginner's Clinic.

A huge thank you to our sponsors, co-chairs, host committee, and everyone who made the day possible. See you next year!

URGENT ⚠️
There is a big push to get the data center moratorium (A11560/S10642) passed before the end of session — which means TODAY.

If it doesn't go to committee today, it's effectively dead for this session.

New York nonprofits provide vital services at the direction of the state: early childhood education, mental health counseling, homeless housing, substance use treatment, legal services, and cultural programming. But delays and inconsistencies in state processes are putting nonprofits at risk of collapse.

After the veto of reform legislation last session, and with federal attacks on nonprofits intensifying, we need to act now.

Tell your legislators to pass two contracting reform bills before the session ends. These are not radical demands. They are basic, good-government reforms.

Nonprofits often serve as the first line of support for communities facing interactions with law enforcement or immigration authorities. We welcome organizational leaders, staff, and volunteers to join us for this virtual program on how to respond confidently and responsibly during these critical moments. Through real‑world scenarios and actionable guidance, this session helps nonprofits strengthen their readiness, protect the people they serve, and uphold their mission even in challenging circumstances.

This session is presented in partnership by New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), Lawyers Alliance for New York, Human Services Council, and Mobilization for Justice as a part of the Nonprofit Resiliency Series.

📅 Save the Date: Alternative Mental Health Crisis Response Panel

Just in time for Mental Health Awareness Month, join us May 21 at 6 PM ET for a virtual panel on the new joint report, “‘Self-Determination is the Pathway to Liberation’: Alternative Mental Health Crisis Response in the United States” by Human Rights Watch, the Center for Racial and Disability Justice, and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest.

At a time when coercive approaches to mental health crisis response are expanding, this panel will discuss why rights-respecting, non-police alternatives are crucial, what they look like in practice, and what it will take to sustain and expand them.

Moderated by Jennifer Mathis (The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law), the panel features Cat Brooks (Mental Health First, Anti Police-Terror Project), Travers Kurr (New Orleans Health Department’s Mobile Crisis Intervention Unit, Christina Sparrock and William Juhn (New York Lawyers for the Public Interest), and Jordyn Jensen (CRDJ at UCLA School of Law).

CART captioning and ASL interpretation will be provided.
