It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of one of our beloved alumni, Lucienne Cheremond, a cherished member of our very first student cohort. Her brother, Lucien Cheremond, continues to be an active part of our community and attends classes every Friday.

$57 doesn’t go as far as it used to.

But City of Refuge International Rescue Mission (CORIREM) is a place where $57.25 can teach somebody to read and write and offer them a a better life.

I am Valentin Sandaire, CORIREM’s Founder and CEO. For the past two years, we have been able to reach out to illiterate elderly people across Queens County: providing them with food, classes on digital literacy, and providing essential care products.

Every day, elderly people in desperate need end up on our doorstep, frightened and confused because they simply cannot afford even basic necessities.

Some are young women who are frightened homeless for the very first time, or older men and women who have tried many times to pick themselves up and failed.

And then there are those like Monique.

Monique is a 75-year-old widow, she came to America a few weeks ago to find a better life and help her family living in Haiti. With the little bit of English she learned, she found a job and she is helping herself above poverty.
Lucien is a 73-year-old who never learned how to read. Now he is writing his name. He can read simple sentences. And He feels very proud about it.

Such a small price for so much good!

It costs $57.25 including the manual, school supplies, refreshments, and a ride to come to class, to teach one person. Your gift will go further than you may have thought possible.

For example, a gift of $114.50 will help teach two people to read and write and receive other care in this Thanksgiving season. A gift of $286.25 will help feed and care for five people. And $572.5 will make it possible for 10 people to enjoy the gift of reading and writing and perhaps start them on the road to a new life.

Please choose one of these options to bless one or more people in this Thanksgiving Season.
