NY Sun Works

We use hydroponics to educate students about sustainability and climate sciences. 🌱

Our first hydroponic lab opened in 2010 at PS 333, The Manhattan School for Children. Today, we have partnerships with 170 public schools across NYC and northern NJ, reaching over 50,000 students and 450 teachers with our STEM and sustainability science programming. In the Greenhouse Classroom, students learn the core, mandated science curriculum through the lens of urban agriculture. While mastering every step of hydroponic farming from seed to harvest, students also get a chance to design their own experiments and engage their critical thinking skills in a way that’s essential to 21st century learning while exploring current and emerging sustainability issues.

TODAY is World Environmental Education Day! 🏫🌱

Why, that just happens to be 100% of what we do right there in one day! 🧐

In the last year alone, we supported the environmental education of over 150,000 students across NYC and beyond. Through our program, our students come to understand the complexity of global climate challenges and feel empowered with the skills and knowledge to become active protagonists of change.

Today, as we celebrate this milestone in the history of environmental awareness, we are grateful to each of our representatives, partner teachers, and students who continue to play a vital role in shaping a more sustainable future. 💚

Thanks to everyone at EY who joined us for a harvest yesterday! 🫶

In recognition of Climate Week NYC we launched a popup hydroponic exhibit at the EY offices in Midtown Manhattan. This was just the ticket for some lunchtime mingling with curious staff who were keen to learn more about our work in NYC's public schools. As ever at these harvests, the basil flew off the shelf with leftovers going straight to the chefs of EY's kitchen👩‍🍳🌱

EY have been working with NY Sun Works for over five years, providing our students with career mentoring, volunteering on our board and supporting our annual Discovering Sustainability Science Youth Conference at the Javits Center. We are deeply grateful for their support! 💚

How many of these greens had you tasted by the time you left high school? 🌱

For most of us the number is probably a little embarrassing!

We're so impressed by the students at Esther Salas Academy for growing such a rich variety of plants! It sounds so simple when you say it out loud, but introducing students to farming and sustainability at a young age isn't just about feeding them. It's about giving them the joy of discovering something new. Something that allows them to put down their screens and activate all of their senses.

Let's all keep saying yes to new discoveries, scientific or just plain tasty this fall!
