What happens when artists push a centuries-old medium beyond its limits?

Contemporary ceramic artists are breaking the boundaries of the crystalline practice through specialized glaze chemistry, experimental firing schedules, and innovative approaches to form.

“Being aware of and taking advantage of all these variables to achieve the crystalline glaze results one seeks is what makes crystalline glazes more than simply a glaze.” 

“There are many failures along the way, but just as many successes that keep us eager to move forward with our formulas, firing schedules, and techniques. This is why I refer to it as ‘The Crystalline Journey.’”

“I’m drawn to low-fired traditions because of their immediacy, intimacy, and pictorial charm. At the same time, I’m inspired by the high art of porcelain and its historical associations with class, style, and refinement. Sugar art and porcelain creation in the Western world were intricately linked.”
