“Nothing about us without us”

We ground ourselves in these words as we continue to reckon with the DOJ memo released last week — which argues that states are not required to provide in-home or community-based care — and our continued fight to protect Medi-Cal and IHSS in California.

As Brittanie Hernandez-Wilson, Hand in Hand’s California Lead Homecare Organizer, reminds us in this conversation with Eric Harris of Game Plan, “disability is not a matter of if, but a question of when. Every single person will be disabled in their life if they live long enough… in terms of the connections [of self-determination, home care and disability justice], this matters to every single human being.”

This work — these fights — concern us all.

27 years ago, the Olmstead decision affirmed what disabled people have always known: we belong in our homes and communities — not institutions.

Last week, the Department of Justice released a memo that threatens to undo those 27 years of hard-won rights — arguing that states aren’t required to provide in-home or community-based care.

We refuse to go back.

Today we celebrate Juneteenth — the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free. Two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Two and a half years of freedom delayed.

It's a powerful reminder of how long justice can take — and why we must never stop fighting for it.

At Hand in Hand, we believe freedom must include dignity and safety, at home and at work. Black domestic workers have been at the heart of the care economy for generations — nurturing families, cleaning homes, and supporting older people and people with disabilities. Their contributions have been undervalued, underpaid, and overlooked for far too long.

This Juneteenth, we're lifting up their legacy and renewing our commitment to the fight for respect, rights, and fair care for all domestic workers. ✊

This time on The Game Plan, Eric interviews Brittanie Hernandez-Wilson, a powerful advocate for people with disabilities to live independently and the Lead California Homecare Organizer at Hand in Hand. The two talk about the power of telling your story, which is the focus of her exciting new venture, Our Stories Our Care, a project funded through the 2026 AAPD Paul G. Hearne Emerging Leader Award. She and Eric reflect on disabled wisdom, her path to California, and Brittanie even offers some musical stylings. We’re sure you will be uplifted and enlivened by the great Brittanie Hernandez-Wilson.

As a grassroots production, we greatly value your support. Please subscribe, comment, rate, review, and share The Game Plan.

CA budget update & call to action! 🚨

The Senate and Assembly released a joint budget this week with real wins from our organizing! It rejects IHSS cuts, protects Medi-Cal for immigrants, and makes corporations pay their fair share. It also avoids a $2,000 asset limit drop — setting it at $21,000 (effective July 2027), buying us time to end the Medi-Cal asset test for good.

We have under 2 weeks to get the Governor on board. Join us for our upcoming Action Hour to Defend IHSS and Medi-Cal to to call the Governor and key budget leaders negotiating the final deal.

When: Monday, June 22nd at 2:30pm PST

NYC is rolling out the ticker tape today— well deserved (Go Knicks!) — now let's roll out the protections for the workers who keep this city running. 🎉

“Why is this budget campaign important to me as a worker?”

Let them tell you. 🎙️

NYC’s 200,000 domestic workers support 1M+ households — yet many still face wage theft, labor exploitation, and barriers to legal help. That changes when we fund the resources workers and employers need.

Let’s make that change New York City Council:
• Boost the Domestic Worker & Employer Empowerment Initiative to $850K
• Include Damayan Migrant Workers Association and La Colmena NYC in that funding
• Renew Legal Services for Day Laborers & Domestic Workers

Because our work is essential. 🙌

Right now, as the World Cup comes to NYC, it’s time to protect the immigrant Domestic Workers who keep this city running!

The NYC Coalition for Domestic Work is fighting to renew the Legal Services for Day Laborers and Domestic Workers Initiative as part of their budget campaign.

This initiative would:
• Expand culturally competent outreach to immigrant communities
• Combat wage theft and labor exploitation
• Ensure workers can access trusted legal representation

New York City Council — let’s protect the workers who keep our city running. 💪

Hear it from them, in their own words.

If you employ a housecleaner, nanny, or caregiver — It's time to prepare! ⚽

With the World Cup here and the threat of increased ICE presence at games across the country — instead of panicking and spreading fear, this can give us an opening to create shared safety with the immigrant workers in our homes, our immigrant neighbors, and each other.

We're ready! Check out the slides below for our latest Sanctuary Homes guide, and find our Sanctuary Homes guidance, including our national and regional resources, and to join our movement, via link in the comments. ⬇️

This past Sunday, we joined our compañeras at CA Domestic Workers Coalition to celebrate International Domestic Workers Day with them in LA. We gathered for a day of celebration, music, learning, lunch, and solidarity.

It was a special opportunity to refuel ourselves with joy and connection after a long, challenging year of organizing.

We are reminded that rest, community, and celebration are also part of the struggle. Thank you to the CA Domestic Workers Coalition for bringing us together — domestic workers are powerful, and our movement is strong. 💪 💐
